I have a Hitachi gd-500 DVD,and a Samsung cd-r/rw sw-408B installed on my pc using windows98se.The problem is when I tick DMA in the cd device settings and then restart my pc and go back to it the boxes are clear again.I found in my bios setting that if I change my cd rom settings from normal to turbo I can then use the DMA function but then when I try to open Nero or WMplayer etc. my pc totally freezes and i have to switch off at the button.Im using a AMD K-6/2 with a 550Mhz processer if it helps.
If anyone can help me Ill put you in my will.

I wouldn't worry about the DMA thing if your system works fine with it off.
I'd like to compare DMA on a CD type drive to the AGP side-band option. In theory you could gain performance with the option on, but all I've ever gotten is an unstable system. I'd rather have a system that's not tweaked to the point of exploding running somewhat slower than it's capable of, than a system that wasn't rock solid stable.

DMA makes a big difference on CD-rom drives. Without DMA it takes me about 5 mins to copy a full CD to my HD, with DMA it only takes me about 2.

The reason im trying to enable the DMA on my CD Rom drives is because when i try to watch movies from disk, even DVD`s its very choppy and within the first 10 minutes the dialogue is a few seconds ahead of the picture and gradually gets worse.I also cant burn CD`s faster than 4x without running the high risk of getting the error buffer under run message.Even if I could just enable DMA on 1 drive would be a help.

Ahh, I was under the impression that everything worked fine with it disabled.

Updating your chipset drivers for your IDE controller should address the problem. It might also not hurt to check for the final BIOS available for your motherboard if you're using an older BIOS.
Not sure which chipset you have, so I'll leave you a link to all of them.
