Roxio CD Creator Rant

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I bought a 16x10x40 CD RW a while back. It came with Roxio CD Recording software. It goes without saying that it was the light version.

To keep this short...I never register software. I will register hardware in case of mechanical failure..but software...it is a waste of time.

I go to Roxio's web site to get an XP patch..only to find out that I need to register to get it. Furthermore, I need to log on first before I can get said patch.

Now, I don't give out info on the net. You know that hardware registration..I snail mail it. So, I am left holding a bag of nothing. I have checked their logging in process, and they want lots of personal info. Furthermore, they pester you with 4 or 5 publication newsletters. This alone tells me that if I ever give them my email..I can expect a deluge of junk mail to my personal account. No thanks..I will pass.

So, can anyone recommend a good CD recording software that works good with XP..one that doesn't force you to register the darn thing?

Oh as for Roxio...2 thumbs down!

And if they did this to hassle pirates...well they did a good job of hassling this honest customer.

Yep. There's problems with Roxio on XP. It's absolutely written badly from the noise I hear.

I've got Nero. It came with my $70 CD/RW drive. I haven't used it a lot as of yet. But, I've only heard good things.

You can download an older version for free I believe.

Nero is your best bet, though it's moderately expensive (cheapest I've seen in stores is 90$CDN). However, it's more than worth it. Make sure to get the 5.5 or later, the earlier versions are missing a lot of useful features.

Thanks for the heads up. Will look into it.

I used to have Adaptec's easy cd creator and it just sucked. With my new burner, I got nero and its a million times better.

Chalk up another tally for Nero.

Easy CD Creator works fine with the proper ASPI layer.

Still, not recommended. Nero is good. I also use cdrwin and fireburner.

I used to have 3 or 4 burning programs installed. Then I found out that the new version of Nero could do everything all those other programs could do combined, so I switched to Nero.

The only thing missing in Nero is the ability to create .bin and .cue files. It can burn it, but not create it.
You'll probably never do that anyway but I do so still need 1 extra program.

*shrug* I almost always give my spam-magnet email at yahoo.com when I register software... no biggie really...

I do the same.

I have Level 1 and Level 2 spam magnets on Yahoo!.

You can get a great price for Nero on Pricewatch.

one more vote for Nero .......i've used both roxio easy cd creater and nero, and i definitely prefer Nero!

You should also look into the DiscJuggler software. I just got version 4, it's quite deluxe.

Just to post an update...I now have Nero software. Haven't tried it yet..but it looks slick.
