How To Change Your Default Mail Program

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

If you use Internet Explorer or Netscape, Windows will not let you make Internet Mail or Netscape Mail your default mail program. There is a way, however, to change one of these as your default mail program, or any other program you use. Doing this involves editing the Windows Registry. We recommend having a backup of the registry before continuing. To change your default mail program:

Click the Start button.

Click Run.

In the Open field type regedit and click ok.
Once you are there, navigate your way to the following folder:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command

From there, double click on the (Default) icon.
In the Value Data field, type the path of the program you want as the new default.
Before clicking OK, type %1 after the path. IT should look something like this:
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\mail.exe %1

Simply substitute the path for your machine, click OK and restart Windows.

Which OS are you using?

I only know win98se.
The top toolbar click tools, select internet options, select programs, in the mail bar enter your new default, apply.
You may need to reboot , if so it will prompt you to do so.

Another step you may need to perform is to change the mailto protocol in folder options>file types. I could not get Firebird to open Mozilla Mail (which is set as default through internet options>programs). It kept opening email links in OE (which I do not use at all) till I changed the mailto protocol to be handled by Mozilla, just used the browse button to browse to Mozilla.exe after choosing to modify the setting.
