NTLDR is missing (win XP)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi,

I've got a problem with my XP system. When booting I get an error saying NTLDR is missing.

I've got a clean XP install, I have tried running the recovery console, copying the ntldr & ntdetect.com file from the xp disk to c:, and running fixboot.
This now gives an error saying boot.ini is invalid and hal.dll is missing or currupt.

Anyone got the fix?

Cheers

Silly question, but have you removed the floppy disk from the floppy drive?

Also, have you checked your HD cables to see if they are secure? Any loose IDE cables inside the case? Also check if your power supply is not defective...

Also check your BIOS settings and make sure the boot order is optimal to your setup...

If that doesn't solve the problem, try reformatting and repartitioning the HD...

And stick ar4ound for more suggestions...

I've been using this system for 6 months or so. So a reformat out of the question.

Oh and I don't have a floppy disk in the drive :-)

Cheers anyway.

Boot off of the CD and "Repair" the system files.

It'll give you that option when it asks you if you want to upgrade or completely install.

I had the same problem when my wife deleted some files that were just taking up space *smack*

boot.ini should be simple to fix if you're just running a single boot config, I'll post mine when I get off work later tonight. As far as hal.dll I dunno if I have that or not but I can check and if it's there upload it to my ISP space for you.

*btw doing a repair didn't fix my system, I had to reformat because of ALL the files that were missing.

I'll give the repair option a go tonight, any idea what needs to go in the boot.ini file?
How can I find out how may HD is setup?

If you've just got one drive then this boot.ini file will work fine. Sorry I didn't get it up after work, had to take my daughter to the ER and kinda forgot about it after that.

Just remove the ".txt" from the file to use it.
