Shared Files on Win 2000

We have a mixed environment of Windows 95/98/2000/XP all accessing a W2K File Server with multiple shares. Frequently (once a day or so) my users will call and say: "Excel is saying i have to save this shared file as a temporary file" or "I have received a sharing violation and have to save as a temporary file" No one else is accessing the file, but when I look in the Computer Manager under openfiles I will see multiple instances of the user having that file open in Read+Write and Read mode. When I call the user they tell me the file is not open on their desktop. Why isn't Windows 2000 closing the SMB file lock when the file is closed by the user? Any help here would be appreciated! Thank you ahead of time.

This is a very complicated problem.
You should search Microsoft's Knowledge Base for the keywords "file locking" based on a Windows 2000 query.
Different versions of different applications will not behave consistently. So, you need to identify which applications (and version) are causing the problems. Then apply the fixes necessary.
There are several hotfixes, registry tweaks and updates that may be needed depending on your particular problem. Some need to be applied to the server, others to the clients.
The simple answer is to update everybody to the latest and greatest. But, this isn't always feasible. Otherwise, you wouldn't have a "mixed" environment.

Well, after searching the knowledge base I have found two different problems. One has to do with a Novell Network that my Windows 95 users still use, and the more important is the following.
Windows XP SP1 users - not all but a few in the accounting department are getting this Save as a Temporary File message only in Excel.
Environment:
Windows XP SP1 Cleints
Cisco 2600 Series Switch
Windows 2000 Server
File Share on none System Drive
Dell PowerEdge 2300 Dual 500 with 1 GB RAM
Acting as PDC with Active Directory - Printer - File and Terminal Server with no more than 50 users at a time.
As far as the mixed environment goes, I am updating the last of the Novell users from their Windows 95 machines to Windows XP machines and moving them all to the Windows 2000 server in the next couple of weeks so that is not a concern. Hope the specifics help.
Thanks again!

Okay, after looking over several Knoeledge Base articles I have determined one solution that has solved the problem for 2 of my users on the Windows XP machines.
File Permissions. Both Individual user account permissions and group permissions that those users are members of were set on this folder. The user permission gave full access, and the group only read+write+modify. After removing the group permission the users have not experienced any problems. 2 days without a temporary file message will keep you all posted as I know this is a problem for many W2K admins.
