Upgrading your computer at the end of the year?

Well okay, so it's more than two months away, but the question arises once again - will you be upgrading your computer system for the holidays?
I know lots of people do their upgrading during the holiday season, so tell us if you're one of them...

i was torn, since i have 2 answers. decisions, decisions. ive already started upgrading my current comp. ive also started buying for my new one, which i should finish sometime in december. does a new computer count as an upgrade?
Posted by: Spider
Definately not.
I tend to upgrade in the spring more often, but I don't really see the need to upgrade, I'm happy with my rig's performance right now and since I haven't been gaming hardcore lately, it's not that important, besides, nothing really out there that taxes my system that much...well, some push on my GF2ultra, but it still performs well enough for me...right now.

I might upgrade the hd, not sure though.

Just finished building a new comp two months ago so I doubt it. But Christmas is still some time away, the only thing I'm looking at is more RAM, maybe a 512 DDR.

This is a tough choice for me. I need a new computer and I had planned on building one during the holidays, but I want the Nv30 and the AMD Claw Hammer included in this new PC.
So I am torn

i believe i saw that clawhammer now is due out in q3 2003. thats almost a year from now, and it will be very pricey for many months after that. by the time the price is reasonable, youll be ready for another computer

Yep I saw that too. If I have enough money after my birhday(Janurary) I may go ahead and build a computer. For some reason I really want the Nv30 to be in my new computer.
So we will see when the time comes.

Definitely not, I upgrade when I need to, not when it's a certain time of year.
Am I the only one that got kicked out of the thread after voting?

Nope. i did too.

Yeah, voting dumps you to the main page.
Anyway, I'm definitely upgrading towards the end of the year. Might postpone a bit in to janary, round out my new machine at 3ghz. It's barely going to be an upgrade though, more of a new machine.
I'm looking at getting something along the lines of this:
P4 2.8ghz
Intel 845PE motherboard
512 megs DDR333
80gig 7200rpm drive or so
I'm still deciding on the rest of it. I want to hold off on a new videocard until nvidia releases the NV30, but I'm not sure how long that will be. I'm tempted to go 9700 pro, but ATI can't ever seem to get their shit together.
I'm either going to keep my plextor 16x10x40 cdrw, or get a plextor 40x12x40 to replace it.
Edit: I'm also hoping to be able to get the drive as a Serial ATA device, though I'm not sure if Intel will have a motherboard supporting Serial ATA in time.
EditEdit: woooohoooo!

I'm still not sure whether or not I'm going to upgrade my computer, though if anything I'll get a new one. I've still got to find out exactly what I want though, and I'm not too sure about which computer I'd like to get...

I upgrade all year round..whenever needed and/or whenever I get that upgrading itch.

other
i am not upgrading, i am buying a whole new one, or more like attempting to buy a new one.

Im not upgrading, Im building a whole new PC around Dec/Jan or whenever the NV30 is released. Was gonna build a new one when the Hammer came out, but I cant wait that long.

i don't guess this would be considered an upgrade because it's a new unit, but to compare the new to the old is a world of difference! the old unit had an athlon 500mhz processor running me. the new unit has an athlon xp2200+ processor running at 1.8ghz with xp for the os. this is a huge jump in performance from the unit i had used for about 2 years!

I'm looking at mobo+proc combos that can be upgraded in 1-2 years.
I made the foolish mistake of buying a rig that is an upgrade dead-end. My p3 933 + dell mobo is impossible to upgrade. So I need a new mobo+ proc+ ram. I might as well get a new rig because I've filled up my 30gig hd too.

the only thing I'd trust to still be upgradeable in a few years would be the clawhammer platform, since AMD likes to keep the same platform for years at a time.
Intel changes theirs every other week though.

No upgrades here. My current setup will last me at least 10 years

I'm not bothering to upgrade jack until I can no longer run a game I own properly. Probably the only thing I will need is a faster video card for next year. I can hold off until the hammer comes out.

Definitely not upgrading. It will be at least 2 years til I need something better.

Absolutely!
My old 33mhz Mac is dieing (bomb pop-up on screen... probably a failing hdd) and I am bringing my P2 266 out to my office for use within the next week. So I will need to buy a new puter for home.

Definitely not. My current system meets my needs. Besides, I'm waiting until some upcoming technology is released and I've got the money to burn.
When I upgrade though, it's to a whole new system, right down to the case. It will probably be at least a year or two before that happens.
One thing I will be upgrading relatively soon will be my Internet connection. Broadband, at last!

Well, for me I'm current;y still running in the medival time period as far as my computer well maybe not really, but anyways.
Currently have a P3 450 with 384 RAM and a GF3Ti. I'm looking at building my own ADM 2100+ on a RAID 0 (KV7333 I think it was) mobo. I'll bring over my GF3Ti and probably upgrade to a SB Live! along with other minor trinkets. And yours today for the low, low price of under $800 with shipping
All this relies on the money situation and my wife's agreement. She's agreed that I can get a new 'puter, but the issue is when. We're buying land and probably looking to build a house in 2 years so we could use every penny at the moment.

Now that I just checked out clawhammer ... I may just try to get my wife to agree to a PS2 to tide me over for a year

I wish i could afford it but i don't have a job(just got fired).........Lol but i accept donations.......
Posted by: Mists_Of_Avalon
My computer is practically a dinosaur...500Mhz Processor 9 gig Hard drive.......and worst of all....compaq..........oh well its been good to me so i can't really complain that much......
Posted by: taco_fox
I'm still thinking about it
It depends on how much I have saved at the end of the year. I'm looking into watercooling, and that will set me back about $250 for a decent kit. And if I get a watercooling kit, I might as well get a new case.. hey what about a new motherboard?
And so it begins again.

No need.
