the trouble with tetris
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Everyone knows that Tetris is compulsively playable, but now scientists have proved that it is harder than you think to complete.
Now US computer scientists have analysed it and found it has a lot in common with the hardest problems in mathematics.
These problems are immune to simple solutions and instead demand exhaustive analysis to work out the best way to complete them.

Tetris worlds is a great game. And it's cheap too.
Really though, after you play it enough, there really isn't no skill to it. It's more memorization. You look at a block and instantly know where it will fit while leaving a place for the next block.

Tetris is one of the best games ever, especially the gameboy version.

Is it actually possible to beat tetris? Like after so many lines and levels does the game actually stop and tell you that you have one?... or do the blocks just keep on coming until you lose?

Its not just fun, its addicting.

addictions are a bitch- stop them at all costs...

tetris does somewhat represent mathematics... just never thought of it that way.
And tetris is the best game next to pong. Any one ever play bombliss? Its basically tetris, but it takes less skill. Its also addicting. I think the makers of Tetris like making addicting games. Maybe they should make Tetris patches to stop the cravings...

Not really memorization, more like you are training your mathmatical or analytical part of your brain. Tetris is very mathmatical and such games have been proven to raise your I.Q. the most famous study is on chess and go. But the block patterns and placing are not memorization, unless you could program a Tetris game to rerun the same patterns over and over.

go is my favorite game.
thee, are you addicted to anything? maybe... OTS? i sure am. (i could list all of my addictions, but that would take too long)
Posted by: TheeMon
no, im not addicted to anything...
maybey masterbation... (LOL JK)
Posted by: AltronHGX
Tetris is OK. Only becauseI can't play it with other people in the room because I tend to unleash the most vicious string of obcenities imaginable when I get my ass handed to me each time.
"Best thing to come out of Russia.."
EDIT: Oh, and Tetris music owns.
Posted by: scorpion_gold

Posted by: TheeMon

...wasnt the guy who invented tetris polish? and if so didnt he invent it in poland? i dunno why i thought he was polish
(and why does capitalizing the 'p' change the pronunciation of polish to Polish?)
Posted by: Nfested
Damn, Tetris is fun.
And I believe the guy who invented Tetris was Russian.
Posted by: N.W.A_Kid
Can an obsession count as an addiction? If so, then I'm Obsessed/addicted to/big fan/fascinated with Bob Barker, and NO I DONT HAVE A THING FOR DIRTY OLD MEN!!!!!!!!!!!!
EDIT: and also, 1 hour and 19 minutes until GTA: Vice City is released!!! (or at least that's how long until I pick up my copy)

my parents won't let me get gta3
Posted by: N.W.A_Kid
that's ok scorpion, my sister won't let my nephew have GTA3 or Vice City, either. I was very lucky w/my parents growing up. I wasn't limited to anything, and I turned out fine for the most part.
*Begins to look hungrily at the children walking down the street*
Posted by: Xtren
That sucks when parents know about how bad some video games can be... my parents don't even pay attention to the rating when they buy me games...
Posted by: N.W.A_Kid
I look at it this way as a parent. People say video games and music and such cause kids or strange people to do bad things. The only way that happens is if a person is so weak minded and gullible, or the parent/guardian didn't drill things into their child's head when they were young. I see it as this:
I would rather have my kid killing cops, blowing stuff up, and hurting innocents in a game than in reality. I am always up for playing GTA3 when I have a bad runin with the law or people I don't like. It makes me feel so much better after playing when I'm angry.
Posted by: scorpion_gold
hm... maybe pointing that out to them will change their minds... although probably, becausse the ESRB recomends 17+ yrs old for M rated games, and im only 15 (in 10 days)
Posted by: Xtren
In my opinion M games are nothing close to R rated movies. I mean games can't get to the point where they totally freak you out so that you can't sleep, and the gore doesn't look as real, which makes it much easier to look at in video games. You won't find porn in M rated video games either...
Posted by: scorpion_gold
exactly. and in some games, like cstrike and socom, they are rated M more because of the fact that you can encounter any kind of thing online. yet my parents wont let me get cstrike either... it's injustice!!!
Posted by: N.W.A_Kid
ahh Xtren, there may not be porn, but only one game I know of right know has full frontal, unscenorsed nudity, and I don't wanna say because I'm not sure if we can talk about that here on OTS so you'll have to let me know. But I agree with everything you guys are saying.
Posted by: scorpion_gold
sounds fun! where can i get it?
just kidding.
um... why do you keep staring at me? you're freaking me out! AHHHHHH!!!!
the lack of cstrike and GTA3 has driven me insane...

Not missing much in CS...it was fun 2years ago.
Posted by: Xtren
This was also the case with Tetris in my opinion... I found that game got boring after a while too... it was just too repetitive for me. Even though the blocks didn't come down in the same sequence it was all the same thing, and therefore got boring after a while of playing constantly.

How many of you Tetris addicts out there have had the problem of seeing the blocks start to fall when you close your eyes?? How about see them in your dreams?? I've had both. . . .anyone else??
Posted by: Shalome
*sheepishly raises hand*
Yeah, Tetris dreams were right up there with repetitive waitressing dreams for a while.. "rotate block, fit block in slot, rotate block, fit block in slot" was right up there with "fill glass, take glass to table, get plate of food, take plate of food to table, fill glass, remove empty plates" bah!

I recall having one where I was flying on top of a giant ostrich while being chased by a Pteridactyl over a flaming lake of lava.

You never played Joust!?

Posted by: Cheese
I've most definately seen Tetris blocks when I close my eyes. I'm not too sure about dreams, if I have had em, I've forgetten em. I've also had the same problems with Tetris Attack and Snood.
Posted by: scorpion_gold
i once had repetitive dreams from playing the sims, and i had to pay every time i opened the refridgerator... and then there were the chocobo racing dreams...
