Help me figure out what song this is...

Ok, I've had this song stuck in my head for months, and it's driving me NUTS because I don't know what it is! I only know two words from the lyrics...
"....and maybe....."
Then there's a guitar that goes, doo do do do-doo at a high note.
I know this isn't much to go on, but I told my friend about it and he knew the exact song I was talking about, and couldn't figure it out either!

is it a guy or gal singing it? i have a feeling i know which one you're talking about, it's just that there are so many songs with "and maybe" in it lol

hmm...well, I tried those lyric sites, but they were 'experiencing difficulties.' I'll try them later. I did a google search, but nothing conclusive came up. It is a guy singing, but with the scratchy-voice type tone. It's a pretty old song, I remember listening to it back in 1997 or 98.
