A legal inquiry has begun into whether media giant Vivendi Universal misled its investors by publishing false accounts.
The Paris Prosecutor is investigating a complaint filed by Vivendi shareholders who are alleging that false financial information was released by Vivendi under its former chairman, Jean-Marie Messier.
Officials from Vivendi in Paris declined to comment.
The prosecutor's office said the inquiry would look into the alleged publication of false balance sheets for 2000 and 2001.
It would also investigate allegations that false and misleading information had been published about the outlook for Vivendi Universal in 2001 and 2002.

eh, update time
French media giant Vivendi Universal, whose accounts are already being probed in Europe, has admitted that it faces two preliminary criminal investigations in the US.
The US Attorney's office for the southern district of New York and the Securities and Exchange Commission's Miami office have separately been carrying out inquiries, Vivendi said in a statement.
But the company refused to comment on the content of any criminal proceedings, saying only that the two lines of inquiry were likely to be combined.

vivendi is a large international corporation. however, unless youre interested in purchasing stock, the only thing of interest for someone in the US would be its gaming unit, which includes sierra and blizzard, as skyhn said. its other holdings are european.
