Martial arts

Who here practices martial arts when they're bored?

I do, I play the music REALLY loud and start to practice with my nunchukus. And I add dance moves to make it "my Style".

Posted by: Xtren

I'm into Tae Kwon Do... though I've been going a lot less of late because of school...

I have a black belt In Chung Do Kwan TKD. I do my forms for cardio and hit the bag on occasion. Burns tons of calories.

Note to self...

Don't mess with Ion

In college, I only got to yellow belt in standard Kata (karate) - I only enrolled in it coz of a girl, anyway ... I DO know how to handle some nunchukus though, although most of what I can do with it are more exhibition than standard armed fighting

Posted by: Chako

I got a yellow belt in Judo when I was a kid. Lost interest quickly when the instructor kept pairing me with the big fat kid who kept losing his balance and thus fell on his poor opponent ad infinitum. It didn’t pay to be “tall” for your age.

I've been taking Tae Kwon Do since I was six. I got a black belt, and was doing great... until I took the summer off. The I come back and... well... let's put it this way... I SUCK!

used to do Tae Kwon DO when i was young.

but since i took ti chi lessons in college, it became my favorate.

so relaxing. look funny so i do it when i am alone.

Posted by: Xtren

I've never taken any other martial arts... once you get used to one I'm sure it would be hard to adapt to others anyway though. They are all so different, particularly the styles of martial arts, you'd have to change an awful lot to do more than one...

Posted by: Ion Silverbolt

The best way to supplement one art is with another one that offers a lot different techniques. A striking art such as TKD or Karate goes extremely well with a grappling or throwing type art such as Aikido or Ju Jitstu. Taking Karate and TKD both is kind of pointless IMO. Sure you might learn some different manuvers, but most are all strikes.

Anyway, I think styles which focus on entirely different skills than your current art are the best to mix because they never conflict with your current style. In fact, the mixture can make you a lot more well rounded. Steven Seagal is a good example of a Karate/Aikido mixture.

And a bad actor!

Bada Bing

Sorry couldn't resist.

I have a friend that is a black belt in TKD and started moving on to the grappling styles soon after. He would go to various tournaments around the area and alwayd did really well. It was impressive to see him combining the different techniques while sparring.

Posted by: taco_fox

I got a junior black belt in Shotokan (I don't remember how to spell it) back in the day. From what I remember, it was much more of a defensive class then anything. I went to a couple tournaments, but the highest I've won is third place in sparring. My favorite memory is when I totally flipped this kid over my back just for touching my shoulder (no, really).

I really wish I could get back into martial arts someday, but it's just a matter of finding time to do it.

Really? Maybe he sounds a little fake, but I do like his style of fighting. He seems much more intimidating than most other protagonists in martial arts movies. His style is a bit more down to earth... and he uses more strength than crazy monoeuvres, which makes his movies seem a bit less exagerated if anything.

Once I get really good (Not hit myself AT-ALL) Then I'll attach 5 inch blades on the nunchakus (something like the game "SoulBlade"). I know it's dangerous, but hey.

But actually, but the biggest mistake I've made with them was hitting myself in the head with them, it hurt a lot...... That..... And my nunchakus slipping out of my hands and smashing my keyboard to pieces. But atleast it wasn't my moniter. And my computer is always protected from stuff like that.

Posted by: Canis Lupus

Uhm, first rule of nunchuckus - never practice in a room where the nearest solid object is not 6 feet away - at least ... and that's only if you were using them while standing in one place...

Posted by: Xtren

I'd revert from using the five inch blades as well, because if the only place you ever hit yourself is in the head it may not be a good idea to use them at all.

Posted by: N.W.A_Kid

When I was a lot younger I took a mixture of Tae Kwan Do, Judo, and Hapkido. I went to my green belt, I could've gotten to Red-Black belt (in our school that was the one right before black) before the schoool closed, but I quit because I got bored. I think my favorite things I learned were my one steps and mido one steps

Posted by: 'DragonMaster

Yes, Canis. I go to another room while while doing it, or outside if it's a good day.

And Don't worry about the blades. That level of nunchaku arts will be for me sometime in the next 2 years.

And oh yes, I was brown-belt and then I quit. I just HATED the Karate teacher. Then I got Tae Kwan Do. The teacher was really nive, understanding, and I looked up to him a lot, then he got fired. And no one told me atleast a good theory why he got fired too. I got a rainbow-colored belt for that one.

Posted by: Erekose

you got a...rainbow..colored...belt? can i offer a suggestion as to his reason for termination

hey maybe you can wear that belt if you had a bellbottoms gi

(sorry, but i was just making fun of my mothers rainbow socks and then you mention this )

I find the teacher has a lot to do with how well you progress in Martial Arts. I've learned over my years of Tae Kwon Do that the more strict the teacher, and the more he pushes you the better he will make you. In general you may not like an instructor because of this, but really it's a sign of experience. I have one instructor that is just great, I do like him too, because he's taught me so much compared to all the other teachers I've had. The level of the students also helps you prgress as well of course. It's hard to move along too quickly when working with a large amount of inexperienced kids... that's been another thing where I work out of late: Lot's of new white belts = lot's less sparring, and more easy (in other words boring) workout. The place I live isn't very highly populated... so we don't really have too many high belts anymore, because they slowly move away from Tae Kwon Do as they get older. I can see this is the case with a lot of people here too... I guess it's only normal to get bored of the same thing and quit.

Posted by: 'DragonMaster

Yes, it was a rainbow colored belt! It's the 5th best one I think..

Thanks for your opinion, Xon. But support the fact that there is a Rainbow colored belt.

The nunchakus: Of course I hit myself many times. But my teacher said "Well that's expectable, coming from you!" But then he said "But don't worry, everybody had hit themself one way or another starting the nunchakus." On average, I practice 5 times a week, for 2 hours. I didn't hit myself in the past 6 months. So it's looking good. I just need to talk to a Ninjutsu teacher about the nunchakus so I can get more techniques instead of just "The way of the dragon".

How dramatic!! Flashing blades, showy moves--wow, I would try something like that myself if it wasn't for the fact that this is probably the most dangerous, half-baked, self-destructive, unrealistic idea ever applied to martial arts. If you need a blade to feel safe or like a bad-ass or whatever, get a wakazashi or some other small blade of Asian origin. That way you'll be able to continue using the nunchuka, as you will still have all of your fingers.

Self-defense is acceptable. Violence is not.

Posted by: Erekose

heh i think the idea of the blades is to scare the shinola out of anyone who dares come near, but i may be wrong...like about that truck wanting to stop at the red light. dont drive on pain meds children. <que cheesy public announcement muzak>

Posted by: 'DragonMaster

AngstMerchant, if you want Stupid/self-destructinve. My friend tied together his two Kommas. (How are they spelled?) And those are like minature Sickles, then they're tied at the end! It's crazy! I'm way too afraid to even go a minute just holding them.

Other than that, I'm speaking for for Erekose's side. Not decapitate a mere pissed off homeless guy who I didn't give change to, or anyone for that matter. Except my sandbag.

Posted by: Xtren

Nah. I agree with Angst. Using five-inch blades on nunchukas is not going to accomplish anything but maybe chopping off a body part. People always make mistakes, and what are the chances of you, or someone else for that matter not getting hurt? They're much slimmer than the contrary.

Posted by: Canis Lupus

Having blades at the end of nunchukus is cool and harmless... if you wear plate armor, that is...

Leave hollywood martial arts to hollywood ...

Posted by: Nfested

"It's all fun and games until someone breaks a leg"

I felt a need to post that, sorry

Posted by: LT

Tae Kwon Do for... *think* 7 years, achieved purple belt and basically withdrew as it is awkward to have your knee dislocate while performing kata in competition. Stunts the flow in an extreme manner. Raising a family tended to make advancement slow. I still assist with the annual tournament in tabulating scores, but there is nothing like a good old fashioned solid workout.

Posted by: 'DragonMaster

Of course, I can always leave the blades alone and practice regularly. (thumbs up)

Anyway................. I need to get some Ninjutsu techniques. I's like to know their... Techniques. I think it's marvelous they way they all move.
