If you are an american in highschool, the military has all your info, thanks to Dubya.

Recruiters are up-front about their plans to use school lists to aggressively pursue students through mailings, phone calls, and personal visits -- even if parents object. "The only thing that will get us to stop contacting the family is if they call their congressman," says Major Johannes Paraan, head U.S. Army recruiter for Vermont and northeastern New York. "Or maybe if the kid died, we'll take them off our list."

Been that way for years. Not due to Bush.
They had that information 20 years ago. All males must sign up for Selective Service to attend schools.
Of course, if you were an American, you might know that. And you might have a reason to bitch.

They stopped calling me when I graduated from tech school with my BA. Until that time it was a weekly event for the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The Coast Guard never called me

There is a pretty big difference between giving them the info yourself, and having it taken without your consent.
With selective service, you still have a choice, even if you can be persecuted for it.
But I assume you already knew that...

What part did you not understand?
The schools have been giving out that information for years. They were giving out that info before there was a Selective Service requirement.
And you have no choice but to register for Selective Service if you expect to go to school. You don't get accepted without proving you've registered. And, you certainly don't get any financial help.

In 1995 when I was a senior in high school, I started getting phone calls from recruiters. It's part of being an American high school student... nothing to do with anything but your age. They started calling again the year I was set to graduate from college.
I don't see how that's any different than, say, all the credit card and loan offers I began receiving in the mail addressed to "recent college graduate" after I graduated from college.
Actually, the recruiters were easier to get rid of.. I just told them I was gay.

To many educators, however, requiring the release of personal information intrudes on the rights of students. "We feel it is a clear departure from the letter and the spirit of the current student privacy laws," says Bruce Hunter, chief lobbyist for the American Association of School Administrators. Until now, schools could share student information only with other educational institutions.

actually, i had a fairly easy time getting rid of mine too, i just told him i might be interested after college so the army could pay for medical school. never heard from a recruiter again......
the only students required to register with selective service are 18 year old males. not females and not minors. i didnt realize it was now a law to give recruiters this information. this is disgusting. no minor should be contacted without parental consent.

As much as I love Mother Jones magazine, Nova, I think their information is a bit skewed this time. I hate to say it, but that quote is simply not true. There is no such thing as student information privacy, except for grades -- they can't share your grades except with other educational institution.

Oh well. My bad then. I considered googling for more specific info, but I don't really care enough.
I didn't realize really how prevalent and persistant military recruiters are down there. Just another fundamental difference between our countries I guess. There is no active recruiting here, and I like it that way. I couldn't imagine living any other way. If I'd ever been approached by the military at any time, you can be damn sure I'd have given them the verbal scathing of their lifetime.
I had no idea that you were required to register with the military in order to attend post secondary institutions down there. That's disgusting.

yes, it is. unfortunately, the occasional attempts to get that repealed are shot down by the nutcases.

The really unfortunate thing is if you don't sign up for selective service you aren't eligible for gov't grants, scholarships, etc.

That's not *exactly* true. In high school, my boyfriend registered for the selective service as "Conscientious Objector" -- meaning the military knew he existed, but he wouldn't be drafted (not like this country will ever have a draft again after VietNam). He was still eligible for college and grants/scholarships. You just have to register.

Nova, there are vast differences between Canada and the US. Not saying the US is bad..but it sure is different.
You really notice it when you go and visit. The atmosphere is very different.
I bet most Americans can say the same about Canada as well.

Noone ever told me that conscientous objector was even an option. Either you signed up, or were ****ed. Makes me wonder how many other rural 18 yr. old students know about that.
Posted by: Shalome
Not many 18 year olds know it at all. My boyfriend was lucky enough to have extremely liberal, well-informed ex-hippie parents.

When I was in Highschool, Military recruiters were there weekly. Out walking around at lunch, durring class, all the time. They had pull up bars setup and other stuff to test people.
Right after I got out of Highschool, I received a call from a Army Recruiter. I told him several times durring the 35 min conversation that I was not interested in any military service, he didnt care. As far as he was concerned, I would pack my bags that night. Somehow I got him off my ass. I bs'd about some job in Nevada and that I was moving soon. I didnt wanna have to lie, but it came down to that. And if that didnt work, I was gonna tell him I had a severe case of Herpes and its EXTREMELY contagious.

Depends on the level of mobilization on whether he would get drafted or not. If it was a total mob, then he would be drafted in a heart beat, though they would probably give him several choices of non-combat duties edit: Doesn't mean he wouldn't be in combat though, just might get to be a medic or corpsman.

Well, there are ways around that. I discovered an effective approach during my fifth conversation with one of these fine individuals. In a rather unfriendly and aggressive manner, I invited him to place his mouth on my genitalia. The phone calls stopped.
Posted by: redwench
or you could get really wild, and say youre not interested, not to call again, and hang up. repeat as necessary.
Posted by: AngstMerchant
That takes too long for my taste. But I tend to take radical steps to solve my problems. I'm the kind of guy who will burn his house down to get rid of termites.

the termites in your brain?

Sounds like you made a pass at him (which would probably be just as effective )
My recruiter called once. I detailed my "life plan" of college, career, retirement in the Bahamas for 5 or so minutes. I didn't let him get a word in edgewise until I'd made it quite clear the Army was not an option.
His response:
"Well, if you're in class and find yourself drawing a picture of a tank, my number is...."
I laughed and hung up.
