Why are people such immature, ignorant bigots?

I don't keep channel logs on mIRC but I do sometimes leave it on when I go to class... and when I come back I usually scroll up a bit just to see what the current conversation's about...
Today I came back from class and saw this in #the-group after scrolling up for half a second. (I'm not going to copy and paste, it's a bit large so I linked the text file).

Now that you're done reading...
My question for the day is, why do people insist on being immature, ignorant, and judgmental assholes? I know that I am being judgmental by calling some people these things, but they seem to fit it in every way.
What is it with people and using the words "gay" and "f**" as insults? Why can't they learn that the use of these words derogatorily does not hurt the people they are trying to hurt, but rather the people who are actually referred to by those terms? I mean come on, you can find dozens and dozens of insults everywhere else in the world - why insist on using these two words, or any other words relevant to homosexuals, as a way of putting down people?
What frustrates me most is the fact that most of the people who use these words remain close-minded about it, and never listen me out when I tell them it's not cool. They fail to understand that using these terms do not hurt ME. They hurt a group people who have never even done anything to wrong them.
What disappoints me MOST of all, is the fact that these people are people in TG, or in OTS. I would think that if you were someone who was mature enough to participate in TG or in OTS, you'd actually be someone a little more mature and a little kinder than that.
***** and ***** words have put them to a new low by my book. And I haven't even begun on the music, which was what created the conversation. I know that they mean no harm when they comment on my music, and I can always take a joke. But sometimes it gets so persistent that it's just downright annoying. And when you start using such words as a part of joking, it's no longer cool with me.
We all have different tastes in music - our definitions of good songs and bad songs are all very personal and preferential - there exists no higher law stating what a good song and a bad song is for each individual. If you like a song, you just do. And if you don't, well then that's cool too.
It saddens me greatly to learn that people who I thought were cool people, who were friends, are actually close-minded and intolerant bigots.
Well guess what? I don't have friends like that.

a person being insensitive, rude, or whatever doesnt necessarily mean he is a bigot. oh, and being called gay doesnt bother someone that is. it only bothers bigots.
and either your friends are idiots, or youre not expressing yourself properly. obviously, you either get excited, or you let what bothers you pass more often than not. a calm, rational statement is required.
but, 17 year old boys will use the words gay and *** quite liberally in this culture. they grow out of it. basically, the decision is yours if they continue to do something that bothers you. you cannot change other people, only yourself.

I've gently told people many times not to do it - at least around me. And I explain to them why they shouldn't use them to begin with, about how they will hurt people who are actually gay, and that they should learn respect in that sense.
Do they listen? No.
Therefore they do not remain as my friends.
I post this not to relate to an isolated incident, however. It's a buildup of experiences (mainly with people online - real life friends actually listen because I choose real life friends carefully) that have led me to expound with such passion.

First of all slope this is #the-group irc. We don't actually act and talk like this IRL. We have even stated that we don't actually mean it and I have said if you don't like the words "gay" or "***" I won't use them around you.
Also I don't think there are any gay people in our room and if there are we wouldn't be using those words. Almost everyone I see in irc or CS uses the word gay, but they don't mean it. Hell unless you are making reference to homosexuals no one even thinks of it that way. I also hear it all the time at school and no one means it in a bad way. Again this is IRC and we mean nothing by it, so if you can't handle it you should leave the channel. As for calling us bigots and immature you should see some of the logs of things you have said.
If you mean that last statement in your latest reply you must have no friends left in our channel considering I still see "gay" being used by everyone and not just our channel.
