Interesting EverQuest documentary

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Half of it is about the apparent connection between EverQuest and the suicide of a man, and the other half is interviewing total addicts. Which is quite funny, because the "addict" they are interviewing was only like level 40s.

That’s because high level people are so addicted they don't have the will power to step away from the game long enough for an interview.

Personally, I got one character up into the mid-fifties, restarted it, got the new one up to mid forties, then quit. The game just isn't fun after you've done everything. Once you start getting those AA points, and finally get into the plains, and raids, you suddenly realize that "Hey, this game ****ing sucks" and walk away. Or at least I did.

The only people I've met so far that overcome this, are the high level people (60ish). Probably because they have some other sort of motivation.

He had the warrior epics, so I doubt he was level 40. I have recently returned to EQ after a year's break. I am on a brand new account on a brand new server (read one I've never been on before).

I play a whopping 6-8 hours a week. It used to be, while I was in school and didn't know any better, that'd I'd log some 20-30 hours a week into EQ.

I haven't conquoered anything or overcome any addiction. I simply quit and threw out the CD's. I got married and play now between the hours of 10-12 at night.

Am I an addict? I doubt it, but who knows. I was able to walk away before in preparation for marriage so I'm sure I could walk away now.

Is my social life suffering due to EQ? Heck no! I'm out atleast 3 times a week with my wife's and mine friends at coffee shops and such. We have people come over all the time and both help out a lot at our church.

My take on EQ ... its addicting and quite badly addicting. Is it possible to overcome? Absolutely, all it takes is willpower. Is it made to consume people? Yes, but all MMORPG's are made like that. True, EQ was like the pioneer in MMORPG's, but someone could have just as easily gotten addicted to those old BBS RPG's from way back when. I can't blame EQ for what it is ... they saw what people wanted in a product and made it ... as far as I know, thats capitalism.

I'm just rambling so I'll shut up now.

no i agree with you...

and it is addicting as a bitch... ive quit 3 times from anywhere around 2 months to about 6 and i only went back kuz of outside influence(ie a rl friend got it- my cusin wanted me to make a gnome n play w/ him on pk server-stuff like that)and i havent played sence like august but i intend to go back to playing once my cusin can start playing in the navy(he just got outa bootcamp he'll get his comp in 2 weeks)... But mind you even if i didnt play i still kept my account... even if i planned on quiting forever i could never just "kill" Valadar he has over 100days(total gameplay) alone not to mention my other chars... id prolly just keep up the account heh

I've never had a character above level 45, never (this was when 45 was a hell level). It just got real boring to get through so I made another character and so on.

For me, maybe that was why the game was so easy to walk away from, because I had encountered the muddlesome aspect of the game earlier than most. I still enjoy playing EQ, for the sheer escapism it provides me.

When I'm playing EQ, its at night, the end of the day when you don't want to think of anything else. My wife needs 9 hours of sleep a night so she's already asleep.

I have one real good friend who still plays, and we use it more of a means to "hang out" than anything (He and I met through EQ and have become penpals for like the last 4 years or however long EQ has been out). Maybe thats why I'm still playing, I dunno.

Yeah, addiction is a funny thing, huh?? Gettin' down to one or two cigarettes a day is not that big a deal. Zero is a humungous friggin' deal.

There is a pretty big friggen difference between chemical addiction and addiction that you've convinced yourself exists. People that say they are 'addicted' to a certain game have just pulled a fast one on themselves. Ahh the wonders of self hypnotism.

I had smoked for about 38 years. I stopped smoking on July 1, 1994.

When I said that, I was referring to EQ. I don't and can't smoke cause I'm allergic to cig smoke and can't convience myself that living with a permanent migraine is a smart thing to do.
