Final Fantasy? Emphasis on Final
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

The two biggest RPG developers in Japan and the industry, Enix and Squaresoft have announced plans for a merger that will take effect in April. Stock in Square will be traded in for Enix stock, which means that Enix will be the dominant of the two. Apparently Enix's big series Dragon Quest or Dragon Warrior, is much more popular in Japan than the Final Fantasy series. Which is quite the opposite over here in the States (and Europe), because I for one have no idea who Enix is. The merged company will be known as Square Enix Inc.

I also think that Square Enix Inc is a stupid name.
Posted by: SKYHN
wtf...that name is stupid. I hope they keep the name "Squaresoft" for the U.S. Market. It will confuse the hell out of a lot of people if they dont.

Maybe it'll breath some life in to the FF series. Enix is known for being experimental when it comes to games.

Didn't know it was in trouble

It's not. It's just that after playing 8 revisions of the game, it's starting to feel a little stale, while Enix games have traditionally strayed from the mold as often as not.

How would a square enix look anyway?

Slashdot has a similar news post, but the wording is a bit different.

Except that Slashdot is the devil.

The combined companies maight make a final fantasy type game, equal to FF graphics, but add the command box such as the "talk, spell, door, search"commands that Enix seems to like a lot.
It would actually be a good thing for Enix, since Enix has some bad graphics, but at the same time, it could be disapointing because Enix wont have bad graphics.
For some time now i have actually enjoyed playing DragonWarrior/Quest more then Final Fantasy. The kids that i hang out with at school think the game sucks. I think i like DW/Q better since its not very popular in America. Since FF is very popular in America, its lost its flavor so to speak.
I dunno if this will be a good thing or a bad thing.
Posted by: Spider
So you don't like FF that much anymore because other people like to too?
And you like Dragon Quest/Warrior better because nobody else likes it?
...

I dont like the final fantasy series because washing my hair in an airport toilet is more fun than fighting hundreds of random battles.
Posted by: pakenney38
I don't like Final Fantasy because it's been the same game adapted from a different predictable plot with every sequel. As far as Final Fantasy X 2 is concerned, I've never been more turned off by a game possibility in my life. It's time for something ELSE already.

Square Enix does sound pretty stupid. And hell I've never even heard of Dragon Quest, while just about everyone (even people who don't play games) has heard of the Final Fantasy series. I think Squaresoft shouldn't merge with Enix... they should keep on making the FF games as they are. The games are really awesome.

North America has what, 400 million people altogether?
Posted by: Wing_Raynor
I, in fact, do love Final Fantasy games. I wonder if the Final Fantasy series will be better with the merge... I guess we will see when the next Final Fantasy game comes out...
Posted by: BW
I love Enix. You guys should try playing Star Ocean 1 & 2.

That's still more people than there are in Japan... which has in around a 130 million...

I could dig up statistics proving that there are more gaming households in japan than most of the rest of the world put together, but it's not worth my time. Dragon Quest is a huge title in Japan, and just because you live an isolated life and haven't heard of it, doesn't mean Final Fantasy is bigger.
Posted by: Xtren
I'm sure the Final Fantasy games are more popular in North America though, and since I'm living here why would I care which game draws more attention in Japan?
Posted by: Spider
I'm pretty sure both articles linked in this post stay that yes, FF is more popular in both Europe and America. However that doesn't mean the Dragon Quest sales in Japan alone, don't beat out the FF sales worldwide. Which I think was the point..

How do you people not know of Dragon Warrior/Quest the newest addition has been out for a year on PS1. Good game not in comparison to DW/Q 4 or 5. There is a new Enix game dont remember what its called about the Merchant from DW4 i believe his name was Taloon or something.
And Enix doesnt just make one bloody game 10 different times. Enix has made Zelda type games, Brainlord for example is a good game for the SNES. I know Square doesnt make only Rpgs but for the most part Square cant make a great (still good but not great) game without Final Fantasy as the title, whereas Enix can make games with different genres and they are still great.

Not many people still play their psone's. Most have moved on to something newer. The only way I knew about the Dragon Warrior game on PSone is because my videostore got a few coppies to rent. I never once saw one rent.
Enix's best game in my opinion-- Actraiser for the SNES. Great game.
Posted by: The_Turks(ff7)
But there are still psone games being released, and ps2 can play psone games. Tis a shame that no one goes in the PS section at stores, some of the best games will never be bought because Psone is not as cool as PS2, i am for one, a person who actually DOESNT want a PS2 no matter what games are on it. The only game that I want on it is not even made by Square. That game is Dark Cloud.

Hey, how'd I miss this thread?
What Final Fantasy needs is some mind blowing, radical change in story and game play that still manages to keep the epic tone that makes you feel like a part of something bigger than yourself. I hate to say this, but Enix HAS been better at making those changes, while Squaresoft has been content to do little more than make new graphics engines. Graphics don't make a great game. They do help make a great game better though.
Also, this merger is nothing new. There have been rumors floating around about this since 1996. Square-Enix doesn't sound so bad to me. I'm looking forward to seing what they can accomplish when they pool their resources.

See, I think the argument of 'the story never changes' is bullshit. I find that the story in the final fantasy games is about the only thing good about them anymore. And on top of that, few games manage to match them.
I also don't think there are very many similarities across the games, in terms of stories. Sure, there are some basic parallels, but then again, most movies and stories follow a set pattern, and have for hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of years.

I totally agree with everything you said. The whole Final Fantasy series has succeeded on the most part because of a good storyline, which is totally different in every game. Nobody would play the FF games if they were not suspenseful as they are, and if they all didn't have that interesting, and complex plot which you look for in games. The gameplay in FF games really isn't anything special, and the random battles can get boring, and annoying as well when there are so many of them. Therefore nothing keeps you glued to the screen while playing except for the story (graphics merely add to the overall effect of the game).

Another thing i dislike about FF games is those damn CGI scenes. Sure they look good and all, but they take sooo much space that soon the whole game will be just CGI and no gameplay. The CGI's also make it so that when a very tiny scratch on the cd can cause the whole cd not to load at all. I keep my cds in there case, never leave them lying on the floor, and on a cd rack. I have no idea how they get those scratches because i am always careful about moving the cds.
And the stories are the same its just the background of the characters, the relationships between different characters. The story line- chase this one guy all the way around the world, only to find out that he is either the minion of something more evil, or after you kill him you fight this dude that has absolutely no reason for being in the game, never being mentioned or even thought of. But that goes for basically ALL RPGs.
The random battles are only annoying when you get them every 5 steps, otherwise they are actually good. The animation in battle of FF games is better then the story line to me.
Man, i just realized how ironic this is that i am saying i dislike FF yet my avatar is from Final Fantasy and my account name is from Final Fantasy 7....Well actually i think 7 was the last good Final Fantasy game, next to FF Tactics

And most books, and most movies, and most any storytelling. It's a standard story formula. It's used because it's a tried-and-true formula, and most people tend to dislike anything that doesn't fit that type of formula.

yes because if you buy a what you think is a game for like $60 and all it is is CGI scenes, and no gameplay you will be pretty pissed off since you could have just rented the "game", but since it was Final Fantasy <insert number here>, you figured since FF is a good title and lots of gameplay time, but you got stuck paying for a game that is actually a movie that you could have paid about 4-8 dollars to rent.
People play video games to be entertained for at least like 20 hours, but if its CGI it would only be like 4 hours of entertainment. They also buy video games to kick ass, not to watch a movie of someone kicking ass.

somehow i missed this post ealier, and i agree totally with kenny. In FF9 the only thing i wasnt able to predict was the Final boss of the game, i predicted that Kuja was not the boss of the game, I didnt know why, something in the back of my mind said he wasnt going to be the boss of the game. Final Fantasies are just getting too predictable. I just finished playing DW5 for the first time and i couldnt predict anything in that game.
And the idea of making a sequel to 10, i still believe if the make one for ten they should create one for the others. I havent beat, nor even played 10 so i dunno how much a sequel the game needed to begin with, but some of the other games could use a sequel, not because they need one, but because the characters were so cool that you want to know what happened to them after they saved the world.
