Here's my problem:
This happened suddenly, I have no idea why, it just did. My CD-RW (ACER 24x10) is not burning or reading CDs of any kind. I can't clean it with a CD cleaner thing (forgot its name) because it just won't read CDs at all. I want to open it up and clean it on the inside, but I'm afraid this will destroy the CD-RW... What can I do? Drivers are not the problem, by the way, and I have already tried formatting.
Thank you for your help.

If your running win 98, see if the cd-rw has gone bad boot-up with a win98 startup disk and choose with cd-rom support, it will be one drive letter higher then in windows, change to the cd-rw drive letter, put in a cd and type dir-press enter- if it can read it, then it is a windows issue ,if not then it is probably the cd-rw. Could try setting it as the master and the cd-rom as slave and see if that helps. Or as the only drive, temporarily have it as the only connection on the cable.
*Also check the ribbon cable connection
disconnect-reconnect both cd-rom and cd-rw,
to make sure it is making a good connection.

It's not the IDE cables. I switched my DVD Drive with my CD-RW and the DVD drive is still working fine (but ever since the CD-RW problem it won't read CD-Rs for some reason goddammit...). And I can't install Adobe now... help me please....

another option:
you can disconnect the drive from the mobo, and put in a cd. if the drive is working, it will play the cd. no need to boot into dos. just make sure it has power.
but generally, any burner will play cds without driver support. so its rather unlikely its windows.

er, oh dear, you have a real problem there. there is one solution that fixes almost any problem: reformat.

If you are running win 98 you can go back before the problem started.
Go to MS-DOS mode - Start||Shutdown||Restart in MS-Dos mode.
At the Prompt type in "cd c:\" without the quotes. Click "Enter".
At the C:\ prompt, type in scanreg /restore. (Note the space after scanreg). A screen will appear that will allow you to select one of the previous four days registries. Choose one and select "Restore".
When all is done, back at the C:\ prompt type "exit" (again without the quotes) and Windows will reload.

Tried reformatting and I'm using Win2k.
EDIT: I think I found the problem. The CD-RW has a small light that tells you when a CD is inside. I inserted a CD and the light did not turn on, meaning the CD-RW is not recognizing CDs. It's probably a hardware problem. How hard/dangerous would it be to open up the CD-RW and clean it? What would I need?

Ok, now that we know what OS your running, try this:
Right-mouse-click on My Computer, select Properties, Hardware, Device Manager, IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, Primary IDE Channel, Advanced Settings.
Make sure the transfer mode for both devices (probably your hard drives) is set to "DMA if possible", not "PIO only".
Do the same for the Secondary IDE Channel. Restart your computer and try burning CDs again.

if it was dirty, it would probably slowly start to malfunction, not just suddenly quit. if its still under warranty, just send it back. however, if youre willing to void your warranty, you can certainly open it up and clean it. just a qtip and the lens cleaning fluid is what you need.

Hmmm, I don't have the lens cleaning fluid, and the DMA thing I already did. Thank you for all your help. Can I use the Q-Tip only? I'll try to clean it later on this week.
Posted by: redwench
um, if you tried to use a cleaning cd, you have the cleaning fluid......
and no, the qtip alone wont help, and might scratch the lens. im sure you have isopropyl alcohol around the house.

I haven't tried a CD Cleaner because it won't recognize any type f CDs. Not about to buy it to waste my money. So I can use alcohol with my Q-Tip?

provided you have the understanding that this will void any warranty you have, and will probably not fix the problem. its possible you could also damage it beyond repair.

I wonder if you have a bad motor in the drive assembly. We have a DVD player at work that stopped reading discs. It will read them if you manually turn the motor to jump-start it. But who really wants to take the case off of the burner anyway.
I would probably say it is a hardware problem....Not software...My solution would be to buy a new burner. They're really cheap now. I just bought a 48x burner from bestbuy for $59 with a $20 rebate.
