For those of you out there with Athlon XP Processors, I was just wondering what kind of temperatures you're running at...
My system:
XP 2000+
Thermaltake Volcano 7
Asus A7V333
512 DDR333
ATI Radeon 8500LE
Right now with my new aluminum case, the CPU runs at almost 80C (according to Asus Probe) when in heavy use, like watching a DVD. With the box open it's considerably less, but it still seems hot...just like to know how other people are doin.
*edit*
there is the problem that my case sits next to the heater in my dorm room that i'm still planning on solving sometime. and i'm still looking into picking up some better thermal grease, but i'm still curious as to the temps i should be trying to achieve...

80C is pretty hot. Considering the max temp is 95C, that's getting pretty high. Definitely move it away from the heater... CPUs generally run X degrees hotter than ambient case temperature. The warmer the case, the warmer the CPU.
My CPU is the hottest running CPU AMD has ever made, and with an average Globalwin heatsink, it rarely goes above 60C in a room that's ambient at about 21C.

My 1600+ idles at around 56C now that I have a motherboard that reads the on-die probe (10 degree increase from the probe under the socket). Of course, the reason mine's so hot is that I have the vcore set to 1.9v. I'd say the average temps would be around 40C-60C, depending on ambient temperatures and what heatsink/airflow you have.
Are you absolutely sure that there's no place other than next to the heater to place your computer?

Athlon XP 2100+
Runs at 55 C with the side panel on and 45C without.

I'm working on moving the case away from the heater, it's gonna take some reconfiguring of my desk. I might just wait till after break when I move back in. For now I'm just leaving the side panel off, it's running about 60 right now. The window provides a nice blast of cool air when open.

my xp2200 with the cpu fan that came with the processor runs at 58C idle and up to 64C at max load. i have 4 case fans and good air flow and still mine runs at these temps. it is stable though, so i guess the processor doesn't mind being that hot. i guess i could lower the temps with a better cpu fan, but i haven't had any problems, so i'm not gonna screw around with it.

As long as it's running below max temp (90-95C depending on processor), it will run fine without problems. However, depending on how your motherboard gets the temperature readout, the number you see can vary by up to 15C in either direction. My processor doesn't have an on-die sensor, it's a motherboard sensor mounted inside the cpu socket.

i get my temperature from the Asus probe software that came with my motherboard. i can also view the temperature in BIOS. would the BIOS temp be from an on-die sensor? the Asus probe temp and BIOS usually are the same.

Depends on if the motherboard and bios are using the processor thermal diode or not. It varies per mobo per manufacturer.

The BIOS temps from my machine seem to be lower than the Asus Probe stuff.
The Asus software alarms me when the temp gets over 86 C, and that hasn't happened yet so I'm not too worried. However the CPU fan was spinning at over 5000 RPM and getting quite loud so I opened the case. Dropped the motherboard temperature almost 20 degrees with the cold air blowing in from outside. Damn it's cold outside...

With the case on, it runs are 44C.
