DVD Burner question

It seems that my friend and i have ended up doind alot of multi media presentations and stuff... Mostly videos.. Up untill now we have either used VHS VCD's or but it back onto a camera to show the videos... THe other day we were throwing around the idea of buying a DVD burner... The one catch is that it really should be external, probably fire wire...
From what i can determine there are several different versions out there. DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD RAM, and then there is just DVD-R... from what i can tell its still a debate between the RW's + or -.. All i really want it to do is to be able to play in a DVD player and in a PC DVD player. Does anyone have any instite, recommendations?

Be very careful buying DVD-RWs.
There are two types.
One can play DVDs and burn CD-RWs.
The other can play and burn DVDs.
Make certain you read the box and know exactly what you are buying.

You'll need to look up your DVD player's model up somewhere, and see which media formats it supports. Not all DVD players support all burnable DVD media.
You'll also need to be careful about buying DVD burnable media, since not all brands of DVD media are compatible with the corresponding burners (I.E. Cheap DVD+RW discs mite not work with a DVD+RW drive), so you'll need to check with the manufacturer about which brands are compatible, and which are not.
Also keep in mind there is not standard for burnable DVD media yet, which is why there’s 4 or 5 different formats. They're also slow, so keep that in mind as well. 40x write is equivalent to about 2x DVD write, so don't expect to be able to burn an entire CD in 3 minutes.
I currently have an internal Sony DVD+RW 2.4x/16x/24x/12x/32x (Quite long, but its (DVD+RW/DVD Reads/CD-R/CD-RW/CD Read). I can't speak for other DVD media types, but DVD+RW is rather expensive, about 24$ for 3 DVD+RW discs, a total of 14 GB of storage, or there about.
All in all I'm quite satisfied with it.

Hmm... I thought that all DVD players would play a burned DVD... I wonder if my Xbox will play them... Probably not since it doesn't like CD-R or RW disks... Time to go fact hunting....
