Pretty Good Privacy has released the source code for their latest encryption program, but limitations are well in place:

PALO ALTO, Calif, December 3, 2002 – PGP Corporation, the recognized worldwide leader in secure messaging and data storage solutions, today announced the release of the PGP 8.0 source code, simultaneous with the release of the PGP 8.0 family of products. This source code release marks the reintroduction of a long-standing PGP policy of encouraging peer review of its code in order to guarantee that it meets the highest standards.

The PGP 8.0 source code is available for download immediately from www.pgp.com at no charge. The PGP source code is provided under a license that allows peer review, but does not permit reuse, either whole or in part. Those wishing to use the PGP source code in their products should contact PGP Corporation for details about licensing the PGP Software Development Kit.

The press release is here.

I'll be interested to hear if someone out there can verify that PGP didn't put in back doors for the Federal Government to snoop around thru like they've done with their previous versions. If anyone here hear's of any news on that, let us know here.

Well, they're releasing the source. If you care THAT much, you're free to sift through the code and find any offensive lines.
