Should advertisments/banners be shown on OTS?

Due to increasing server costs, I am planning on putting in a tiny bit of targetted advertising on the site next year.

This is just a little poll about your thoughts on banner advertising. This will not affect any final decisions I have at the end of the year, though, but it's good to hear what people think

other

as much as i dislike banner ads, it doesnt matter to me as long as the ads are small not those huge ones, or popups. you could get the ones on the side that you can close (the ones that i think are mainly on geocites or yahoo sites, it sort of a popup but not the really annoying ones)those ones dont bother me.

Posted by: Tweaker

Hate to see it Laggy, but if it helps us out to keep going then I'm for it.

Posted by: Daedleus

I voted other. I don't mind banner ads if they are not invasive or irritating (i.e. bright flashing graphics, etc.). Pop-ups would be bad, but they don't bother me (literally), because I use Opera.

Targeted adverts are the way to go, though. I wouldn't mind seeing ads that pertain to the content of the site, and since this is a technically oriented site, I'd expect to see adverts of a similar nature; not debt reduction or classmate search adverts and the like.

That's just my opinion though. Ultimately, it's whatever it takes to keep the site up and running, because someone has to foot the bill.

Same as bsaically everyone else:

Banner ads aren't too bad
Pop-Ups are of the Devil

But, whatever it takes to keep the site up ... this site is too great of a resource that it should not go under.

Ever seen that commecial with the guy on the computer that looks like he's playing a game, but he's killing pop-ups, making sound effects and all? Heheh

Posted by: Null Actor

Just don't allow anything that takes over the browser or plays music/sound, and it's fine.

Posted by: redwench

heh, a quiet discrete ad is fine. flashing, sound, and/or popups will result in a lynching. the ads wargy has on tg arent bad.

Posted by: Spider

Doesn't really matter either way.
Banner ads don't bother me at all. As long as they're not the flash ads with sound and are impossible to close. I hate those things, heh. Banner ads aren't really invasive at all, so, whatever works.

Posted by: Outlaw

As long as it's not pop-ups that appear everytime you click on another section and it doesn't interfere with my music, I don't really care about banners.

Posted by: ZeRo_MaXwInG

I think its fine it only unreg users see it. Nothing big or flashy.

Posted by: ccpeters

I pretty much agree with what the others have said and think that any ads should certainly be targeted and appropriate for this forum. The kind of ads you might see on Tom's Hardware or Andantech, for example.

Posted by: nocode

what ever it takes to keep this site going man..........just please don't use the pop ups or flashy adds.

Posted by: Bobaroo

I would prefer not to see the banners and ads and would like it to be for unregistered members, but if it is a must to keep the site up I will not mind.

Posted by: SKYHN

If they are small, dont use flash, and are definitely not pop-ups, then I have no problem with ads.

Posted by: justinious

Other:

Disable pop-up ads for people who have bought OTS merchandise or "tipped" via pay-pal, money order, sexual favors, etc.

Posted by: redwench

you could always sell tshirts with verdigris on them

Posted by: Xtren

I wouldn't mind banners on the site, especially if it helps keep OTS going. Hopefully they won't be too big and annoying though...

Posted by: BW

Whatever will help you. Preferably no pop-up and ads placed at the bottom of the page

Posted by: Xtren

Yeah pop-ups might be a bad idea. Afterall we've had quite a few polls revealing how few people actually pay attention to them.

Posted by: Spider

plz

Posted by: EOT(US)

Laggy ......... what is wrong with asking for donations? You have a P.O. Box, right? If people don't have a credit card, or a way to use Pay Pal or whatever ..... they could just drop you a money order in the mail.

And for most of us in here ...... giving up a Big Mac once a week for a month, and sending the $$$ they would pay for it in to you, would make them more healthy, and OTS.net more healthy too!

So Laggy, post a P.O. Box number and let's all get some $$$$ in to to keep OTS ........ alive!

Afterall ........ this Tis the Season to be giving, right ????

Posted by: steadyeddy

I agree wih the majority I think.

Banner ad's are ok aslong as there kept small and sweet. No stupid pop-ups.

I want his site to stay...xxx

Posted by: Shark180

Ever seen that little sticker with celvin peeing on a ford logo... Take away the logo and make it a banner

Posted by: Phate

Laggy, I agree with EOT(US). I, for one, eat WAAAAAY too much takeout(Curse you, Dairy Queen!), and it would do the site good too. I mean, banners would be good too, just as long as they aren't the annoying "IF FLASHING YOU'VE BEEN SELECTED!!!" banners. But seriously, I know I'd be glad to donate to you, man. Whatever it takes to keep this awesome place alive.

Posted by: schoby14

I dont like them at all. But as long as there not to big and distracting, then i guess its not too bad.

Posted by: Shalome

It really comes down to: which would be worse? A few unobtrusive banner ads, or no OTS.net at all?

Posted by: Nfested

I wouldn't even mind pop ups on OTS.

That's where the choice gets really easy A banner or two, or hell even a million banners isn't a tough price to pay for OTS's existance.

Posted by: PhantomGamer

I don't like banners or pop ups put its up to you

Posted by: Outlaw

Umm... this is a poll from last year and the advertisements are already here...

Posted by: Canis Lupus

Hehe, if he didn't notice the ads, then I guess I was successful in making them unobtrusive

I was at first going to abstain from voting, as i was torn between other (my 1st choice) and yes-but save them for unregistered users (a close 2nd), as I think an effective choice would be an integration of both, provided that integration is balanced.
I qouted Daedlues, because I believe he makes some strong points to this effect.

Thank you for your time, and subsequent consideration. =<'I like to help, when I can'>=

yeesh, this old dead thread got revived and i read it. as a statement of not wanting more ads, i went ahead and donated $10 via the paypal link, only to complete reading the entire thread and finding out that the ads where already added last year. oh well.
