Strangest problem i have ever encountered

My roomate is having the craziest error. Last week i borrowed his processor and when i put it back in his computer is stopped working. Later on that nite the processor fried we think from a poorly installed shim. Since then he has bought a new XP 1700. He is running an ASUS A7V226-E MB. We are currently booting with only CPU, RAM and vid card. The MB beeps on no ram but does not beep on no vid card. The vid card is a Radeon 7200. The ram is tested in another system and another power supply was brought in. If anyone has any sort of suggestion on what the problem could be, please respond, we are at our wits end.

i guess in the heat of my explanation i forgot to mention the computer is not booting.

Are you sure the old CPU is fried and not the motherboard?

it stank the whole room up we are pretty sure. but now we are thinking it could be the MB
