Cd Drive Slow Down

When ever I try to install or download stuff of a CD an error msg comes up it says system cannot read from the specified device and my CD drive sounds like its getting slowed down until it completely stops.

how old is this drive, and how much usage has it had? can it play cds, or is it hopeless?

Its been around for about 2 years but the same happens to my other drive which is a CdR drive and its much newer.This Sux I can install any of my games including D2Lod and if i dont login into my account all my stuff wil be erased and there wont be much to live for.
