And now, an update on my life:
Last night, my friend threatened to kill herself. I talked to her for a long time, and she finally said she wasnt going to do it. I'm leaving for school in 10 minutes, where i would normally see her.
I am scared shitless.
my original conversation with her was online, then i talked to her on the phone.
my question: did i do the right thing? should i have called the cops? i am in serious need of help.
and to those who are considering suicide, read the following:
My favorite two quotes:
Life sucks. You can laugh at it, or cry about it. Isn't it more fun to laugh?
Live life to its fullest, you've only got one.
And here is a song I wrote:
Laugh For Me
I once heard a saying,
You can try and try,
But life just beats you down
As it passes you by.
Look at your life,
You can laugh or cry.
Laugh for me, baby,
Come live your life!
Laugh for me, baby,
I'd give it all to see you happy!
Laugh for me, baby,
I just want to see
You smile for me...
I'm left behind,
In a cloud of dust,
Everyone racing ahead...
It makes me think I really must
Be alone...
I hear your laugh, I see you smile,
My troubles all go away...
I'll be good enough for them,
Someday...
Laugh for me, baby,
I'd give it all to see you happy!
Laugh for me, baby,
I just want to see
You smile for me...
I wait for you,
I hear a sigh.
I turn to see you
I look into your eyes.
You collapse in my arms,
Nothing could tear us apart,
You hold the key,
To my heart...
Laugh for me, baby,
I'd give it all to see you happy!
Laugh for me, baby,
I just want to see
You smile for me...
I just want to see
You smile for me...
I just want to see
You smile for me...
You hold the key,
To my heart...
Thanks for listening to me, i really needed to say that,

Don't call the cops. Call her parents. Or tell YOUR parents. Or tell a trusted teacher or school counselor. Someone besides you needs to know about this.
If someone really wants to kill themselves, they will. Most people who announce they're going to kill themselves won't actually do it -- it's a "cry for help" and they're begging for more than you alone can possibly give them.
Your friend may hate you for a while for bringing other people into her "problem," but she'll thank you for it later.
I hope your friend is okay.

suicide isnt illegal anymore, as far as i know. so theres no point in calling the police. usually, if someone really intends to commit suicide, they dont discuss it with other people. if they discuss it, its an attention getting device rather than a legitimate offing. however, psychological assessment is called for. should she be underage, call her parents. 18 or over, youll just have to convince her.

Suicide isn't and has never been ILLEGAL. However, if the person is a danger to themselves, law enforcement can be called to assist in an involuntary committment to a hospital.
Trust me on this one.

yes, it was illegal in most states until the 60s. i think it still was somewhere in the us until the 80s.
im aware you can call in law enforcement, but the person would have to be really deranged for them to do anything, and depressed people are rarely deranged. the police just cant haul her off because some other person says so. generally, the police only get involved if the person is dangerous to the community, aside from some infraction of the law. so its generally a waste of time if someone is suicidal, unless theyre determined to take others with them.
note: the sentence for the crime of attempted suicide became less as time went on. in order of severity: involuntary commitment, prison term, and everyones favorite, death. yes, at one time, the punishment for attempted suicide was death.

good news. my friend is alive and well. i did tell my parents, as soon as she mentioned it. i dont think she did this for attention, because she didnt say "im gonna kill meyself", she said "dont worry if im not in school tomorrow". i had to press her to get her to tell me.
and thank you all for showing concern. even though i dont actually know any of you, you all seem willing to help me out. you people are the ones that shape this world in a positive way.

Message boards are sooo not the place for this.

I prefer societies that accept suicide as a legitimate option to life.

then tell me, after consulting my friends and family, where is the place for this? (aside from my psychiatrist, it always takes too long to get an appointment.)

school counselors. i dont know of many high schools that dont at least have a visiting one. this is the kind of thing they are employed for. use them.

If you already got help from friends and family, what makes you naive enough to think that you'll get any kind of quality help on a message board? I can think of plenty of innocent sounding 'advice' that could be very very very harmful.
It's someone's life. Don't you think it's worth a little more than advice on a message board?

Time to close the topic before things become really serious ... good to know your friend is alright, but in the future, the help of a professional - psychiatrist or counsellor - is always worth the wait...
