Japanese Mitsubishi Materials announced this morning that Nintendo has opted to adopt its AHD Series 2.4GHz wireless ceramic chip antenna for the company's wireless Wave Bird controller.

The current Wavebird model communicates at 900Mhz and it works absolutely flawless. Nintendo claims the controller works at upto 20 feet, but in testing it, IGN found that the controller actually works upto 90 feet away! Also notable is the battery life- again, Nintendo claims 100 hours on 2 AA batteries. I personally just replaced my batteries for the first time (I bought the controller in June!).

Clearly, the Nintendo Wavebird Wireless Controller is pretty much perfect as is. Its cheap and it works extremely well. I cant possibly see the benefit in Nintendo upgrading to 2.4GHz technology.

2.4ghz wireless devices are much better than 900mhz devices. Mainly because 2.4ghz has less interference from other devices. I have a 900mhz cordless phone and a 2.4ghz cordless phone(both vtech) and durring certain times of the day or just in certain parts of my house, the 900mhz phone has lots of static and interference while the other never has a problem. My Surround Sound system remote is 900mhz also, and if I use it and use the 900mhz phone at the same time, there is significant static. If I understand the whole wireless frequency thing correctly, with 2.4ghz you are on a higher bandwidth and dont have to worry about other devices if they are also 2.4ghz, while on lower bandwidths, like 900mhz, you are open to interference if you have multiple devices at 900mhz.

I bet mainly they are doing it because 2.4ghz is pretty much the standard.

Um, yeah, but the 900MHz controller works 100% without flaws. Its perfect. End of story.

Why **** with perfection? Nobody is going to play their gamecube 100 feet away from the system.

It works good for you, but not for everyone. How many wireless devices in your house run at 900mhz? If you have several, they will conflict. With 2.4ghz and higher(I think they are up around 5ghz now) you dont have to worry about that.

Have you played with more than one wavebird at once? Ive heard that they dont always work well with more than one of them being used at once.

I've played with 2 wavebirds at once with no problem at all. The things have 16 different frequency chanels that you can play on.

I've got a 900MHz phone as do about 20 other people who live on the same floor as me.

Hell, I dunno man. I guess I'm lucky for not having any problems with my wavebird. But, in every review I've read-- there have been nothing but praise for the thing.

Its going to suck if this new 2.4 version raises the cost. $35 is so nice.
