Swedish interactive entertainment developer MindArk today announced the virtual universe Project Entropia is going gold on January 30th 2003. Project Entropia is Sweden's largest software project ever, and has been in development since 1997.

Project Entropia introduces unique features like a real economy where its currency, PED, is exchangeable with any major currency in the world. The software needed to enjoy Project Entropia is free to download, and this virtual universe is free to enter and spend time in.

Some of the features this MMORPG boasts sound VERY appealing compared to the other ilk that's out there. Still, the use of real money as the base for the economy will probably just turn the game into somekind of lame online virtual casino.

And a MMORPG without a monthly fee I just don't believe. Nothing is for free.

This is very similar to the pricing plan of Magic: The Gathering Online ... there is no monthly fee for that game, but you need to actually "buy" your own virtual cards to use in that game ... can be very costly since MTG is already an expensive hobby, and MTG Online uses the same pricing for their real and virtual cards.

It works for MTG since it's got a humongous user base ... a new MMORPG that uses this scheme might be a hit and miss proposition, depending on what the game content is ... I personally didn't purchase MTG Online because of their "purchase your content" scheme ... same thing goes for this game, I guess...

One thing's for sure though - this is a more of an e-commerce emulation compared to the other MMORPGs ... it can turn out to be a virtual dating service with kewl graphics, or an online auction shop using virtual avatars ... the possibilities are endless to those who can afford it...
