Boot issues

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi all!

I need some help and I thought this would be the best place for it

I would consider myself decent with software, but I'm a hardware imbecile (my hardware resume consists of installing ram, a cdrw, swapping a bad power supply and installing NICs).

This morning, I came into the room to find one of the computers unable to boot. When I pressed the power on, lights would turn on on the keyboard and cpu and I could hear the speakers trying to turn on, but then everything dies.

I opened up the case to see what happens when I turn on the computer and I can see the cpu cooler fan and the power supply fan both turning on and almost immediately halting (usually after about one rotation).

This is an old computer (one of those cheezy desktops that were built to be compact and have the monitor sit on top of them). I think it's a 133 or a 233, celeron, 32 mb ram.

No idea what brand it is (nothing on the box itself to indicate what it is).

Anyone have any suggestions as to what the issue might be?

Looks like it might be a faulty power supply ... you can stop by at a computer store and get an approximate same model PS and try it out ... you can always return the thing for a refund if it doesn't work...

probably the power supply. could be mobo. might be the wall outlet/surge strip. if i may be so bold, if its anything except the wall outlet/surge strip/plug junk it and replace it with a new comp.

Yeah, that's what I was guessing, but I wasn't sure because it's actually getting power to it for a second...

Guess I'm headed to Fry's! :P

--------------------
edit: As much as I would LOVE to junk it, it's a work computer and I can't junk it during our 3rd busiest holiday season of the year.

Gives me all that much more incentive to convince the boss to buy a new one after the first of the year.

well, convince him now. you can move the hard drive over, so you wont lose data. but its just not cost effective on a pos that old to do any hardware replacement, except a fan.

Too busy right now to do anything more than a 'duct tape' fix.

I'm going to try a new power supply (should only be about $30) and if that doesn't work, I'll talk to her about junking it now.

well, you can always show her this thread

basically, if cost is a major issue, a low end dell for $600 is more than 10X faster (literally, im afraid) and would have a warranty for a minimum of a year on all parts. most likely, you would be able to run it for several years without a problem.

this.....thing.....you have now is really going to be acting up and dying over the next few months, assuming that its not fried already. powersupplies are very stable, once one goes from old age, expect other parts to follow rapidly.

Believe me, I know

I'm not the one that has to be convinced of this monstrosity's poopiness :P I've wanted it replaced since I came in here over a year ago, but I just recently took over things from a mother technical aspect...

NOW I HAVE THE POWER!!! MUAHAHAHAH!

Well, not really. But I fake it really well!
