'Firefly' display could light up TVs

In a few years, analysts and experts predict the onset of flexible plastic displays will allow roll-to-roll printing, making the screens far cheaper to build than an LCD, which must be assembled in a vacuum.

OLED screens have several other advantages. Since their polymers emit light on their own, they do away with the power-sucking backlight used by LCD screens. Without the backlight, the screens are lighter and thinner -- display models are just 1/4-inch thick -- and run longer on a smaller battery.

Looks like really good news for existing LCD applications. However, the truly deployable versions that would make this sort of technology 'revolutionary' seems to be a while in the future. Due to the delicate nature of the organics, devising a rugged version of the flexible displays that would be useful for 'in-the-field' use in industrial, engineering and military applications will require new materials, I would think.

Lets hope that Nintendo uses something like this for their next Gameboy.
