XP on hardrive

i got a hardrive from a buddy with preloaded XP on it....he hates XP but couldn't figure out how to format it to put 98 on it.
so now i have it and would like to know how to format it. i read somewhere that the NTFS file system cannot go back to FAT32 file system..is this true? if so how do i access the hidden part of the drive that has XP
