Playstation 2 disk read problem

I have been having a problem with my Playstation 2 lately. I have noticed that my DVD-format games (i.e. the games with the blue-tint data side, not silver data side) are not working well with my console. When I place these disks in my system, there is a horrible rubbing/vibrating noise like the disk is contacting some part of the CD bay while attempting to spin the disk. Furhtermore, it doesn't read at the correct rate so I get a disk read error, which makes playing games difficult. The only way to avoid this problem seems to be to put the disk in, press the 'reset' key and then quickly roll the console over on its top surface. Even then, the disk will sometimes catch after a while and lock up the game, causing loss of progress, annoyance, having to suppress the urge to throw the damned thing out the window, etc. This makes me sad.
My questions: Is there a fix for this problem?? Is this problem common?? Does Sony have a recall or replacement policy for this issue??

Aw crap.. looks like Sony's shoddy craftsmanship strikes again.
Yeah man, this is a horribly common problem. It happens way too often. I'm glad I got use out of my ps2 without it breaking.. I think I was pretty lucky.
I'm not sure what the exact problem is, but you have two choices-- send it to sony for repairs or buy a new system. We've had quite a few threads here about this problem- its pretty much the only support related question we get as far as consoles are concerned. Sorry to hear yours is malfunctioning.
I think if you send it to sony, the price is somewhere in the $75-$100 range-- Null or someone else will be able to give you an exact amount. And of course, a new system will currenly run you $200.
Good luck with whatever you do

Im past 2 years on my launch system. Not one problem "Error".
If you end up buying a new one, wait til after January 1st, the new Bundle is supposed to start soon.

Through a sony store (which is qualified to send the PS2 out for 'repairs'), it cost me 200$CAD, which is about 125$ USD. Of course, they don't actually repair it, you just wait two weeks and they send you a refurbished console. Which you'll be lucky if it lasts more than a few months.
My recommendation is to buy an extended warranty somewhere when you buy a new PS2. While they are usually ripoffs, being able to get a replacement on the spot for free is definitely worth it when it comes to the PS2.

When I bought my PS2 at Best Buy a few months ago, I made sure to splurge on the in-house warranty service they had ... I don't normally get those kinds of things, but seeing the problems people have posted in these forums, I thought it would be a good idea.
It cost me around $40 I think, but it would sure come in handy, when the event comes that a similar problem hits my PS2.
Strangely, my PS2 is still in top-top shape - and I watch DVDs heavily (around 2-3 every week)...

Here's a question related to Angst's... Does anyone know enough about the Playstation hardware to tell us WHY turning the console upside-down after startup allows the disk to be read, but leaving it right-side-up or sideways doesn't work?

This was (on the original Playstation), a manufacturing defect in the the first version of the hardware. They had lens aperatures that for some reason where not tightened down properly and thus gave a slightly incorrect amount of space between the lens and the disc.
In relation to the original question- I'm on my 2nd PS2 now after about two years. My unit was part of the second shipment sent out to my area by Sony. It always did have problems playing DVD movies, as well as the blue type CD-ROM discs for PS2.
My unit took a divebomb off of my friend's dirty clothes basket, and at that point it wouldn't even receive power.
So I have a new one now - which I should say is not even manufactured in the same manner. Even the grill on the front was moved down quite a bit. The system is also quite a bit lighter than my previous one. So the PS2 has undergone a revision. The big difference though is that I have had no problems with it yet.
Don't waste your time trying to repair a unit through Sony. I've tried this once. They claimed to have fixed it, and then five months later it started doing the same thing. They'll charge you $98 USD to fix it, and if they can't fix it, they'll charge you $30 USD just to have looked at it. That'll some crap.
Get a new unit. You'll be happy you did.

I cann't believe the crappy product/service from Sony. Four months old and the problem started with dark (black/blue) disks. It then progressed to everything (blue/black/silver penut butter sandwich). It didn't matter what was in there, it couldn't read it. So off to sony it goes for warranty repair. EIGHT WEEKS! I almost wound up divorced from having to spend so much time with my wife. When it came back it had an adjusted warranty of 90 days from date of service, which was a week and a half before I got it back. Four months later (now) same thing and according to Sony I'm up a creek. The console is currently a big black paper weight, but before I toss it and by a new one I would like to attempt to repair it myself. It's not like I could make it any more useless than it allready is. Does any one have any good tech info on repairing this problem?

You can attempt to repair it yourself if you want to. More than likely you have a bad drive motor or laser assembly, but you would probably have to replace the entire drive in either case. Go to google.com and search for Playstation 2 repair parts. I think the drive would probably cost you about $80 USD. That was last time I checked.
You will need to open the casing by removing the rubber feet from the bottom of the drive and then removing all the screws. Remember which holes the long screws go in by marking them with a Sharpie. The only difficulty in replacing a PS2 DVD drive is the data cables that are attached to the rear and bottom of the drive. It is easier to remove the cables from the main board first (this is the board that contains most of the circuitry you'll find inside the unit, and is usually in the left most lower compartment of the PS2 casing). the flat chewing-gum-like data cables are connected to two brown clamps on the main board. The dark brown parts of the clamps can be opened up to release the data cables. Then, remove all of the screws and other connectors from the DVD drive. Put your data cables on the new DVD drive and feed the cables down through center to the bottom near the main board clamps you opened earlier. Clamp those suckers on. Put the power cable back on the new drive and screw the new drive onto the plastic posts that the old drive was removed from. That is the basic run-down. Sorry I can't get pictures for you, but my old PS2 was gutted long ago, and some of the parts have been thrown out.

sometimes it just works to
1.break it and buy a new one
2.take it apart and blow all the dust out and clean the laser with a qtip and alcohol, rub gently
3.go with a new system and use it for a footrest when u get a new system
if all else fails just go pc

4. Sell the PS2 on Ebay and use the proceeds to fund purchase of a new -=sniff-sniff=- factory-fresh PS2!

yeah or that
