I'm looking to get rid of my two cable modems and buy a router but I wanted to know whether any of you with routers experience problems with games as a result. Also, I'd like to know if anyone knows of a particularly good brand. Thanks.

LinkSys is king when it comes to Routers and Switches.
I got a friend that runs 6 computers (for Everquest) off 2 routers and he says he doesn't experience too much problems.
Personally the only router-ing that I've delt with come from the business environment.

I have a Linksys router, and for some games or apps you just have to allow certain ports to play or use. After that it is fine.

I had a Linksys router for a couple years before it crapped out on me. Then is when I discovered that Linksys only warranties their routers for 1 year. Shop around and consider warranty as much as anything. Their not cheap to replace. I eventually replaced mine with a Netgear router which has a 5 years warranty.

I have been using a LinkSys 4 port router for about 8 months and have been happy with it.

I have a Netgear RT314 I got for $50.. 4 port.. have had as many as 12 on it with some helf of hubs..
Just put in a Dlink 5 port my dad picked up for $40 at Fry's Electronics.. very easy to set up.. and no issue with speed.. my brother plays games with it..

We've had our 4-port LinkSys for about a year with no problems... well, no problems that couldn't have been fixed by learning how to configure the thing instead of swearing at it... (configuration is easy, btw, once you know what to look for).

smc is not that great. It's what I use, and I end up with problems for every game I play. I would not recomend an smc.

Hmm, any chance you can send me your configuration settings or is it really dependent on machine? Thanks.

Configuration settings vary depending on what you want.. do you want your router to assign your computer an IP address (DHCP) or do you have your network set up for static IP? You can also choose port forwarding, depending on what games/applications you are running... So, uh, no, I really couldn't send you my configuration settings.

Personally I've got the Netgear RP114 which I have to say is one of the better routers I've seen and used (compared with some shit that my friend has by belkin).
It's easy to set-up, use, and configue to foward all the correct ports, etc.. (provided you can find out which ports games use).
hope this info helps.
