Well, I got a Gamecube
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: Gunslinger
I haven't played it yet, but I expect to waste the entire rest of the week on it.
Best Buy was running a deal where you could get the system for $149.99 (the normal price) but it also came with Star Wars: Rogue Leader for free. Not the greatest game in the world, but what I played at E3 was fun. That was what made me go get it at this time, having the added game at the normal price. I also picked up Metroid Prime with it. As soon as I'm done playing those, I'll go get Super Mario sunshine.
Nothing important here, really. Just thought I would share.
Posted by: Shalome
Man, I wish our Best Buy had that deal when I went to buy Angst a Gamecube today... They weren't giving away Rogue Squadron, but he's been having a hell of a good time blowing things up in Metroid Prime. I almost picked up Rogue Squadron too, but it was like 60 bucks and I was already buying the Gamecube, Metroid, a memory card, etc, etc...
I'm interested to know... does anyone have those screens you can attach to the Gamecube so you can play it anywhere? If so, are they worth it? Also, does anyone have the adapter so you can play GBA on Gamecube? How well does THAT work?
Posted by: Gunslinger
That's odd. The deal was advertised in the catalog that comes with the newspaper. I was under the impression that those were nation wide offers.
Also, 60 bucks??? The most expensive games at the best buy here are 49.99 and those are just the newer/bigger releases. By itself, Rogue Squadron was 39.99.
I also got a small $5 off thing too. When you bought any gamecube accessory with the cube, you got $5 off your total bill. I bought a memory card.
Posted by: Shalome
We live in hell.
Rogue Squadron was 59.99, as were most of the other games. The Gamecube with Mario Sunshine included was 199.99 (that game sucks, though, so I got the plain one for $50 cheaper). And no rebate/$5 off coupons either, even though I bought a memory card...
On the weird side, the Best Buy here had only 3 Gamecubes left and about 100 Xboxen and PS2s. There were also whole aisles of PS2 and Xbox games, but only 1 rack of Gamecube games.
Posted by: Gunslinger
Interesting. The one here seemed pretty balanced between the three consoles, though the other two systems currently have more games on shelves than cube.
And Mario Sunshine rocks.
I'm getting owned on my new cube. I failed to finish the first stage of Rogue Leader 3 times, then I moved on to Metroid Prime, where I spent an hour looking for this spherical object that is supposed to open a door.
If not for fatigue, I would have kept playing.
My first non E3 experience on the Gamecube has left me feeling pretty good about the purchase, however.

Hmmmm. . . . .where would Samas Aras find a metallic sphere??
BTW, I figured this one out in about 2 seconds.
Posted by: Cheese
Mario Sunshine is THE game for Gamesube as far as I'm concerned. That or Beach Spikers. I bought the Sunshine Pack a couples weeks ago and have no need for any other game.
I do offer this piece of advice though, buy a Wavebird. I've never liked an accessory so much.

Metroid Prime rocks the hizouse.
Posted by: AK47
thats true
I was watching 2 dudes do a review of it on tv yesterday and it was crackin me up. they complained that you couldnt look up and down without holding R. They said that it didnt feel like a fps (which it obviously isnt). Then they moaned about how there is too much exploring and backtracking. These guys must have never played a metroid game in their life. They kept going on and on until they delivered their final score = 7.
brilliant.
Posted by: Gunslinger
Asshats.
Posted by: AK47
yes sir.
Thats the thing thats been getting me with every review I read-- just about every one, positive or negative, always has to complain about the fact that the game doesnt controll like a regular fps.
I dunno, I must be strange- I thought the game controlled pretty close to perfect. From the instant I started playing, it felt like a 3D Metroid and not a Goldeneye clone.
I think the only beef I have with the game is that it's locked up on me 4 times now. Tis rather unacceptable.
Posted by: Gunslinger
It has yet to lock up on me, but I'm still in the Chovo ruins, so, I haven't given it much chance.
While I wouldn't join the bandwagon and rip on the controls, I must admit that I felt that they were a little bit cumbersome. It's nothing to lose any sleep over, but some things are a little akward, for instance, when youn have enemies that get right in front of you, and then above you at the same time. There is no way to rapidly target the enemies (you would be able to shit your arm, if you had a cannon on it, to any number of targets with relative speed and ease). It bothered me for a little bit, but eventually I got used to it.
One thing that still bothers me though, is turning around. If there's a button combination for a quick 180, then please, tell me (I should probably read the manual closer). When you get enemies behind you, it takes way too long to turn around, and you can take a lot of damage.
Posted by: AK47
Damn, you brought up two legit control problems. Throw me some pretty graphics and I guess I'll overlook most flaws
Your point about having enemies above you while fighting a ground creature at the same time is good. I've had that happen numerous times where I'm fighting some dude on the ground only to have some mosquito lookin thing come swoop down on me while I'm trying to adjust my aim. Definately a bummer.
As for the quick turn, as far as I know, it doesnt exist. I really never paid much attention to it, but now that you mention it, you are right- turning around is fairly slow. I sorta back up and turn around at the same time- basically, just keep moving. That seems to work best. Give that a shot- it can help avoid some damage when an enemy is getting you from behind.
Posted by: Gunslinger
They get me from behind, and they never use lube.
Stupid space pirates.
Posted by: Phate
Space pirates are a pain in the butt, but just wait for some of the stuff down the road.
I'll ask my friend about your 180 turn need. He's the Metroid: Prime playing machine. He can't get enough of that game. He's on the place after the Magmoor Caverns, I forget the name of it(Some kind of snow -covered area.)
If he doesn't know the answer to the question, he'll either A) try every combination he can think of, or B) come up with a shortcut to turn around as quick as possible.
I... need... caffine.
Bye.

Mr. Slinger, you are fired.
Oh, and Phate, your friend is in the "phenandra drifts". Damn, the snow area looks nice.
Posted by: seperoth
what i found kinda easy to turn around faster is to keep walking and don't stop and turn around it usually works

Minor spoilage
I beat the bozz of Chozo Ruins after my second attempt, and got the varia suit. This made me think, "I'll go back to that area earlier where it was to hot to enter." Since I'm a dumbass, I jumped in the lava. Since I'm a bigger dumbass, I forgot to save. Varia suit protect from heat, but not from lava. I couldn't find a way out.
I do like what happens when you die, though--the scream, and the visor fading out like a TV would if it lost power.
End Spoilage
Posted by: Gunslinger
And now I'm stuck. Arg!
Posted by: Shalome
Where are you stuck?

Can you say OUCH!
hehe Nice typo Gunny.
Posted by: Gunslinger
I needed to find the wave beam to get into a lot of places.
Spoilage
I had searched everywhere that I could go. Eventually, after I had scoured every area that I could three or four times, I made it back to the ice temple in Phendrana. This time, however, when scanning the busts of the Chozo 'really really smart people', I noticed that there was more to read that just "This is a bust". I noticed one that was cracked, and went on from there. However, it takes a lot of time to cover every inch of ground on the map just once. I did it multiple times before I was able to go on.
Moral of the story: Scan everything, and read it closely, no matter how insiginificant it may seem.
End Spoilage
So I advanced into Phendrana. The game had been pretty cool up to the point where I got stuck, but it became exponentially more exciting after I got the wave beam. Too bad I died. Those flying pirates are bitches and surprise attacks from Metroids really suck.
Posted by: AK47
Yeah, that area of the phenandra is by far, the most difficult part I've expiernced yet.
The metroids and the pirates can really dish out some pain.
Posted by: Gunslinger
I've refined my tactics, so I can usually fare well against them. However, those two control problems I mentioned earlier really hurt when you are getting rockets shot at you from above by a flying pirate that you can't see or target.
Posted by: AngstMerchant
Flying space pirates is why God created Super Missiles.
Posted by: Gunslinger
I know. That's how I kill them anyway. But, can't shoot them if I can't target them. Can't target them if I can't see them.
Posted by: Gunslinger
Ok, next topic. I'm thinking of buying Evolution Worlds, as that is about the only RPG out (that I want to play) before Skies of Arcadia comes out at the end of January.
I'm wondering, does anyone know about this game (actually two games, for those of you who played them on Dreamcast)? The two together is supposed to make it rather lengthy (which is what I'm looking for), and they are done in the tried and true early Final Fantasy style. Will it be worth the money or is it a flop?
Posted by: Null Actor
The flying pirates aren't the worst. They are pretty easy to deal with compared to some other enemies later in the game.
Posted by: Gunslinger
Yeah, I got used to them eventually. Just get a lock, and fire a super missile. Battle over.
When I got the ice beam, however, I thought it would be even easier--you know, freeze them, and then one missile does the trick. Not so, however. They dodged 75% of my ice shots, so, it's back to burning missiles on them.
On a side note, does anyone know the maximum number of missiles you can get? Is it the same 255 as in Super Metroid?
Posted by: Null Actor
Wait for the jetpack dudes to get ready to fire a missile. When they do that, they sort of hover, and you can hit them with an ice beam shot.
Posted by: AngstMerchant
Lock-on + lateral movement + 2x jump = Key to survival.
I eat Chozo Ghosts on toast. . .
Posted by: Gunslinger
Chozo Ghosts are ok as long as you don't run out of missiles. I had run out in the section on the way to the ice beam. Since I entered and re-entered that main room 3 or 4 times, I fought 3x the Chozo Ghosts, with no missiles (I had previously expended them while demonstrating the wave buster to a friend who was over). That....was not fun.
Posted by: AngstMerchant
Wave Buster??
Posted by: AK47
Slinger-- From every review I read, the Evolution series is supposed to be pretty bad. One may have gotten a 7 or so on IGN, but that aint saying much. I dunno, check out some old DC sites-- they'll tell you about the game.
Skies however, is fantastic. Easily one of the best DC games I played. Tis a definate buy.
Posted by: Gunslinger
Wave buster. Super Missile is to Power Beam as Wave Buster is to Wave Beam.
It's reeto.
Oh, I've decided against getting Evolution Worlds. Instead, I'm going to get Eternal Darkness as soon as I beat Metroid for the first time. That will hold me until Skies of Arcadia comes out (probably longer than that), and after Skies, I'm going for Zelda.
Posted by: Shalome
Eternal Darkness is crazy, yo.
Posted by: Null Actor
I played through that over the holidays. There was one part that made me jump and scream like a little girl cause I wasn't expecting it. That was the high point of the game, and it was never repeated. Sad. It was an okay game overall, but it could have been a lot better.

Hmmm, I guess you need a suit augmentation that I don't have cuz, as is, the only charge + missiles attack I have is with the Power Beam.
Mmmmmm pie.
Posted by: Gunslinger
Yeah. You won't be able to get that upgrade ntil after you defeat Thardus, but I won't spoil the location for you.
On a semi-related note: Phazon Mines = omg hard
Posted by: AngstMerchant
Thardus is history. My biggest problem lately has been having too much room to run around in. My routine for the past week has been: come home, get stoned, wander around in Prime with zero direction for a few hours. Two days ago, I got the Ice Beam in the Hall of Elders and then turned right around and went alllllllll the way back through Chozo Ruins looking for stuff to open. I completely missed the two elevators right next to the Hall until today.
*hangs his head sheepishly*
I just found the Frigate today.
BUT I KICK CHOZO GHOST ASS!
Posted by: Gunslinger
You need the gravity suit before you go anywhere in the Frigate.
And it's the area after the Frigate that is hard as all get out.
Posted by: Phate
Has anyone gotten Resident Evil Zero yet?
I killed the scorpion once, and the egg thingys have just decided they want to start hatching. I'm not exactly sure what to do about them. Anyone know an easy way to kill them?
Zombies are fun to kill
Posted by: Gunslinger
Well, I'm done with Metroid. I'll shoot for 100% on hard mode after I play a few other games.
Here's what I've got lined up for the near future: Tetris Worlds (as 9er put it, a game I can play with my girlfriend), Smash Brothers Melee, Eternal Darkness, Skies of Arcadia, and Resident Evil Zero (I can play the others on PSX).
Anyone know of anything else coming out in the next few months, besides Zelda, that might be worth looking at?
Posted by: AK47
Skies will take you a long long time.
Its good.
Posted by: Gunslinger
Yeah. I can't wait. It has a release date of January 28th.
Posted by: Gunslinger
Just bought Eternal Darkness for $18 and Skies comes out in a week.
Woot!
Posted by: AK47
$18. solid deal.
After some time off, I started playing metroid again and I entered the mines. Very cool. Just picked up the superbomb (the one when you're in the morph ball). Nifty.
Mr. Slinger- what percentage did you finish the game with?
Posted by: Gunslinger
78%
I haven't played it since I finished it.
Posted by: Gunslinger
I've put in less than an hour of playing time, and I'm already stuck on Eternal Darkness.
Posted by: AK47
haha, I got stuck a few minutes in.
I kept wandering around the beginning of the mansion, fooling with the big telescope and I just gave up.
Posted by: Gunslinger
This game is omg awesome.
Those hallucinations can really mess with your head.
Edit -
Note to self: If you want to get any sleep, do not play this game at night before bed. I was exploring the second floor of the mansion (for those who have played it). I made it to a bathroom attached to one of the guest bedrooms. I examined the bathtub, then proceed to shit myself.
Save.
Quit.
Stiff drink.
Posted by: SKYHN
Gunslinger, do you have a good home theatre system? That game has some of the most awesome Dolby Pro Logic II sound Ive ever heard.
Posted by: Gunslinger
It's not a profound home theater system, but I run the sound output to my stereo system. It's decent. Two good sized and well-powered speakers at opposite ends of the room, and a sub.
The sound on this game is truly excellent, and I don't really mean the quality. It's more the placement than anything. Gives me chills.
Posted by: Gunslinger
Geez. This game is incredible (to me). It won't win any awards for gameplay, but the story and effects are stunning. I'm on the edge of my seat for plot, and being tortured by suspense (and those damned eerie effects) at the same time.
Eternal Darkness gets the Gunslinger Seal of Approval™

Very Minor Spoiler:
Too bad that's the ONLY time it happens in the game. If they'd have kept up that level of freakiness, and did that in more than a few places, the game would have been better than it was, IMO.
Posted by: Gunslinger
Yeah, there is room for improvement. There have been other moments, though.
I would like to see it pave the way for other games of this type. The gameplay is similar to Resident Evil, but, the effect it has on the player is much different. I'd like to see it taken to a new level in future games.
Posted by: Null Actor
Play the silent hill games.
Posted by: AngstMerchant
Nova, you're wrong. There are affectable areas in Metroid Prime that have no corresponding scannable tag. If you want digi-cam shots, I will be happy to oblige.
Posted by: Null Actor
The only ones that don't are the ones that show up only on your xray visor. For obvious reasons. If you can find any other than that, feel free. Not that it really matters to me all that much. You tell me that a game of average quality is inconsistant... well, doesn't surprise me much.
Posted by: AK47
I need a little help in Metroid.
Just got the graple beam and then went back to the magmoor caverns to get the plasma beam.
now what?
Posted by: Gunslinger
There's another entrance to the Phazon Mines that you need to find.
I won't tell you where, unless you want me to.
Posted by: Null Actor
Once you have the plasma and the grapple you need to get the xray scope, if I remember correctly, before you can progress.
Posted by: Gunslinger
You are correct. You need the X-Ray before you can advance any further into the Phazon mines.
Posted by: AK47
forgot to mention that I have the xray visor. Oops.
Anyways, yeah, after wandering around for quite some time and evenually doing a full check of my map, I found out that I needed to head back into the mines.
Didnt need to find an alternate entrance though.
Posted by: Null Actor
SOLUTION (read: Spoiler):
In the phazon mines where you opened the forcefield and let metroids out, there are invisible platforms you can hop across to get across the phazon area.
Posted by: AngstMerchant
Go to Magmoor Caverns and find a force-field bridge that is blocked with debris. Super-bomb that shit and you'll find another entrance to the Mines.
Posted by: Gunslinger
AHAHAAHAHHA
Posted by: Gunslinger
Just bought Skies of Arcadia today. It's pretty interesting so far. I like the battle system.
AK, how long do you think it should take me to finish it?
