Couple probs and Questions

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Question:

What’s the best free firewall out? And where do I get it

Prob:

I have a nasty pop up problem. When I go to bed at night and come back to the computer there will be between 40-60 ie windows open. Pop-ups usually happen when you are surfing and not just sitting idle. So I don't know how to make it stop.

Prob:

I downloaded the new drivers for my video card and it told me uninstall the old ones first. yet when I went to add/remove programs the window could not open and neither of the other windows in the control panel would open and when I right click on my desktop and go to properties it won't open either

If pop-ups are happening when you're idle and NOT SURFING, you've got a major problem. You've most likely got ad-ware and spyware on your machine. Go download AdAware 5.83 from LavaSoft and run it immediately. Delete absolutely everything it detects as spyware.

A firewall won't stop pop-up windows, but if you want a free firewall, check out ZoneAlarm.

You can download pop-up stoppers such as PanicWare Pop-Up Stopper or StopZilla. These are programs that run in addition to your browser.

Unless of course you have Anarchy Online installed, in which case, it creates an image of the cd on your hard drive, and one of the folders is named "Gator". Don't delete that folder. Just check the path and filename of the files your deleting.

This should help with this problem, that is if you are able to get to desktop properties.

Try pressing the Windows key + pause break simultaneously. That should bring up your system properties.

What OS are you running? If it's Win2k or XP it's the Windows Messenger service, not MSN messenger. I had that happen on my parent computer that is running 2k. I was just sitting there on the desktop and this pop up comes up advertising some crap.

To Disable do this: Go to the Control Panel and Double Click Administrative Tools. Then Double Click on Services. Then scroll down to Messenger. Double Click on it and under Start Up type, but disabled and click apply. That should stop those popups.

Well thanks for the help on my pop up problem. The program found 57 infected files!!

But still problems, my ZoneAlarm won’t install. It craps out in various %’s of installation.

Also I can’t use certain functions in my control panel. Add/remove hardware and programs can’t be opened, Display properties, along with some others.

ok I have this virus BKDR_NETDEVIL.15. I deleted all of the other files that it said were infected except this one.I don't think that I am alowed to delete it or am I?

or this one

That .bmp file is blank.

That virus is actually what's called a "trojan horse" or "remote access trojan (RAT)". This is serious -- it basically hands over control of your computer to "the bad guys." They can do everything from see what you're typing to turning on your webcam to watch what you're doing. Get rid of this virus as soon as possible!

Delete all files that were detected as infected, and then it's VERY IMPORTANT that you follow these steps:

Removing Autostart Entries from the Registry

Removing autostart entries from the registry prevents the malware from executing during startup.

Open Registry Editor. To do this, click Start>Run, type REGEDIT, then press Enter.
In the left panel, double-click the following:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Microsoft>
Windows>CurrentVersion>Run
In the right panel, locate and delete the entry or entries:
kernel32 = “%System%\Kernel32.DLI”
*Where %System% is the Windows system directory, which is usually C:\Windows\System or C:\WINNT\System32.

Removing Malware-Created Registry Keys

In the left panel of Registry Editor, locate the following keys and delete them:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>CLASSES>dLifile
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>.dLi
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT>dLifile
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT>.dLi
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>System>CurrentControlSet>Control>
SessionManager>Known16DLL’s

After you do all these things, reboot and then run another virus scan to make sure your machine is clear. Then change ALL your passwords immediately. This virus acts as a keystroke logger, which allows the "bad guy" to see everything you type -- including passwords, credit card info, etc. Hope you didn't order anything online lately...

it's not blank onmy HD and it won't let me post any attachments. also I cant find any of these files in my registry (first time in Redgedit).

Posted by: Fred

I also have to delete one of these files and I don't know which one to delete. If i'm not mistaken one of them is mission critical.

Posted by: Fred

Am I suposed to delete the whole folder or just a file or two?

Posted by: Fred

attch probs

Posted by: Fred

don't understand why they're blank

Posted by: Fred

or not showing up

Posted by: Fred

I just did an ms update and after the reboot I got this message. What does it mean and does it have something to do with my virus prob?

Posted by: AtariFX

Fred, I have some really good A/V software I'll give you tomorrow. Also, it may be wise to do a windows repair just to get your sys files back in order. Of course, my fav thing to do is to just wipe it clean and start from scratch anyway. You gotta lay off the Diablo!! It's like crack man. Have you set any restore points to go back to, maybe you could go back a couple weeks and see if that helps. Aeyyyy-yaaaa

Fred, my friend, I hate to tell you this... but unless you can get a good antivirus program a cleaning function... If kernel32.exe is infected, you're most likely looking at a total operating system format and restore.

At this point, given all the problems you're having, it might be the best option anyway.

I figured that I would have to do that. As always thanks the help
