Al Gore never said he invented the internet, he said something like "I invented the internet something something protection act." Which I don't remember exactly, and was then edited and misquoted by the media.

(drumroll please!)
The exact quote:
"During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system." -- Al Gore, during an interview with Wolf Blitzer on CNN's "Late Edition" program on 9 March 1999.
Poorly phrased, but he was speaking about actions he took while in Congress to further funding and research that led to the popular Internet. DARPAnet (the foundation of the internet) was already in place in the 70s, when Gore was in Congress.
