Apparently, the USAF pressured its sleepy pilots to use "fatigue management tools" (also known as "amphetemines"), resulting in the lapse of judgement that caused pilots to drop bombs on friendly troops, killing 4 Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan last April.

Hoo boy.

is anyone really surprised? although i find it amusing that amphetamines are routinely used in the services legally (and in many situations, quite rightly) but according to the federal government "drugs are bad and support terrorists". gotta make up your mind there guys.

None of that seems right to be, but, the Air Force would probably rather have someone to blame other than themselves.

Canadians? pfffft the Air Force doesnt care unless it kills its own troops... and even then I dont think they care much

it is a legal defense not fact yet. it seems to me since they where told not to fire and he dropped a 500 pound bomb on friendly soldiers he should be held accountable. no matter how high on speed he was. it was a order from his commander not to fire but to wait to confirm whether they where friendly. the tape has been released, it is very clear.

Yeah well they should, because the guys that did it are going to pay for it. I'm not totally surprised something like this happened, and I feel sorry for the American troops that are going to be in trouble because of this because this could have happened to anyone. Either way they have to face the fact that they did not obey orders to hold fire and that they killed their own allies because of a mistake. They still have to be held guilty for the mistake.

Oh and all you guys saying Canada doesn't have an army suck. Remember that we only have 30 million people up here while you have around 250 million. That kind of explains the smaller army up here.

should the pilot who dropped the bomb be held accountable? sure. did he disobey orders not to fire? so i'm told. was he high on speed? could be. but let's just keep in mind, he found people who (in his mind) are trying to kill him. maybe he saw something that didnt quite sit right with him and he decided that they were hostiles. true i dont know the specifics, none of us do. but if it comes down to a 'me or them' situation well i know i for one want to go home in one piece. so can i understand his bombing them? sure. if he is any sort of human being there is nothing the military can do to him worse than the thoughts of those men he killed, his allies, going through his mind late at night. hell even killing the enemy is hard, even when it's a 'me or them' situation, but to have killed his allies? his friends? i honestly dont know how someone could handle that. should the bastard pay for what he did, he already is. its a shitty deal for everyone involved

well from what i know of the Airforce (australian) up until about 20 metres or so (not sure what that is in your measurement) the ADO has control of the pilot but once the pilot is within that space it is the pilot's decision. The pilot has to decide the nature of the threat and it's severity. Very complex system, for the pilot to have disobeyed orders he would of had to be outside that space, for anyone to decide the nature and severity he would of had to be within this space. Now if he had been told to turn around immediately then he disobeyed orders. Technically though once fired upon the pilot's decision over-rides anyone elses.
