Wow that looks really good (not the food but the game)
I never played the other Silent Hill games though... are they pretty good? Or would they be something like Resident Evil? (I didn't like those games)

Silent Hill is sort of like Resident Evil, as they are both "Survivor Horrors" and play somewhat similar, but the camera in SH is not stationary in one part of the screen and it plays more like a 3rd person shooter. Resident Evil uses sudden appearances and other things that jump out at you to scare you, while Silent Hill uses the environment to scare you, such as moaning from sources you cant see, fog and darkness. One of the biggest things is that its pretty much dark the whole time and you have a little flashlight that attaches to your shirt. The light isnt very bright so its hard to see if something is coming or whats going on around you.
And then theres everyone's favorite, Pyramid Head.

GET IT AWAY GET IT AWAY!!!!!!
I'm playing through Silent Hill 2 right now and that thing thoroughly scares the shit out of me every time I see it.
Die.
No, I haven't beaten it yet. Because I know I'll have to confront that thing eventually. And the very idea frightens me.

Heres what you will be stalked by in SH3.

Someone spoil the story for me. Why is the town infested with zombie things, why do you have to find this chick, why the hell is there 3 games on the same event?
I'm playing SH2 on the PC right now, and I'm completely lost.

Major Spoiler Alert for Silent Hill
Basically a lot of stuff doesnt make sense. Its a town that has some "****ed up repugnant s***" to steal a line from Jewels. I beat SH and was scratching my head at the end. But there is some direction in it. You should really play SH if you want to try to understand the story, because its hard to explain. But theres one main thing to remember: Something has happened to the Town of Silent Hill and it has effected all the people within it, except for a few and has created 2 worlds. There is one Real world and one Alternate world. You can distinguish the two by your environment. The real world has stuff that looks real, like cement streets, lamp posts, etc. The Alternate world has lots of Chain fence for walls, the ground and other things and there is usually blood and rust all over, as well as pentagrams. Also, as the Real world transforms into the Alternate world, you hear some kind of sirens. Theres also a lot of other strange stuff in the Alternate world. Its also silent the whole time(except for environment stuff, like rain, snow, gates swinging, electricty, etc) , unless there is a monster or a cutscene.
In SH, the main character, Harry, is driving with his daughter, Cheryl, for a vacation in Silent Hill(its actually a resort town). While driving there at night(its very dark), he sees a young woman in the road and swerves to miss her. He crashes, and when he wakes up, his daughter is gone. The jeep they were in is wrecked. The freeway tunnels are blocked off and theres no way out, so he heads into the town there, which turns out to be Silent Hill. So now not only is he searching for his wife, but his daughter as well. At the begining, he finds a cafe and runs into a cop, Cybil, that also found her way to SH somehow. The cop gives him a gun and he goes out into the town. So he goes through the town finding clues about where his daughter is, such as pictures in crayon and messages in crayon(she was coloring when they crashed). He keeps seeing a little girl running around, but only the back of her, and it looks like his daughter, who he chases through most of the game. And you run into monsters as well. Further in the game he runs into a really old woman named Dahlia Gillespie(her voice is funny as hell) and she tells him the town is the way it is because of "Samael", but thats all she tells him. Theres also a few other people he finds, Dr. Kaufman, Lisa Garland and Alessa Gillespie. They are the people unaffected by the strange things that happened to the town. Harry finds out a few things:
There was a Cult in Silent Hill consisting of Dahlia, Dr. Kaufman, possibly Lisa and several other people, and Samael is the one they worship. The cult did things to Alessa.
Samael is some kind of demon and the pentagram is related to it.
Alessa was nearly killed years ago when her mother set her house on fire while Alessa was inside when she was a baby. She is badly burned, yet when Harry sees her, she has no burns.
Dr. Kaufman carries a briefcase with unkown contents and a gun.
Harry has told Lisa about the Alternate world, and she thinks whenever Harry goes to the Alternate world, he is just sleeping, and he has to find his way back to wakeup. Lisa thinks its his imagination. He thinks that if he were to die while in the Alternate world, he would disappear in the Real world because its real and he is not sleeping.
Later in the game the Harry has flashbacks in a Hospital and the house that was burned, and he finds out somehow Alessa was healed by a ritual and that she supposedly is the mother of Samael. He finds his way into the Silent Hill amusement park where Cybil has been effected by the demon and tries to kill him. You can go two ways at this point, Kill her or spray this red liquid on her that you find earlier in the game. It effects the end of the game.
At the end of the game, you fight the Demon, Samael. You find out that this demon is Alessa and it is also Cheryl, because Alessa is Cheryl. Affter you kill Samael, a baby appears that has sort of a glow around it like an angel. Depending on if you killed Cybil or not, you will take the baby and leave with Cybil or take it and Cybil wont be there. without her. Then thats the end of the game. If you didnt kill Cybil, you see home movies of Harry and Cybil together with the baby living their lives in happiness. There are 7 endings to the game, the one I got was the best ending. Some of the other endings depend on certain things in the game. One of the bad endings shows Harry waking up in his jeep bleeding from his head. The whole thing was a dream, then he dies. Another bad ending shows Cybil slapping Harry to wakeup and they escape together. Theres also a bonus "Alien" ending. You find this channeling stone and you use it at certain points in the game. Each time you use it, you see a small light in the sky. At the last point that you must use the stone at, a spaceship will land and Aliens will take you to their leader. The leader gives you a laser gun called the Hyper Blaster. If you start another game, you get the gun through the whole game. Thats just an easter egg ending though. Theres also another ending that I heard about where you get to drive an ambulance found at the Hospital through the Town. Easter Egg as well I assume.
But if you really wanna know the story fully, getting the game would be wise.
As for Silent Hill 2, its not related to the first(as far as I have gotten) except for its in the town of Silent Hill. Since you have made it past the beging, you obviously know that he got a letter from someone with the same name of his wife, who has been dead for several years, saying something about its "Their place". So he goes to investigate.
I havent beaten SH2 yet, so I cant say much more about it. Its a lot more f'd up than SH though. Some of the stuff about SH that I said might not be exactly correct, but its about 95% accurate.
All in all, Silent Hill games have extremely complicated stories that are hard to make sense of. I would love to see a Silent Hill movie, but it would have to be done right.
(if anyone sees a mistake from what I wrote about the first games story, post)

Alternate worlds in SH1? Well that explains a lot about some things that happened in SH2.
Like the Hospital for instance.
I just beat SH2 last night with the "Leave" ending. Really a lot of loose ends in the story that weren't solved.. I started a new game with the "Maria Subquests" but I'm really not that motivated to play it.
You're not even told what you're supposed to do.

Silent Hill 1 was more of an unexplained mind**** than the second. In terms of cohesiveness and explanation, the second makes a lot more sense.
Spoilers...
Silent Hill 2 mainly portrays silent hill as a town that amplifies the guilt of James over the death of his wife, and gives it form. You really only learn to understand this if you've done multiple endings. He helped put his wife out of her misery, at her request, but the guilt called him to silent hill, where it took form. In one ending, he kills himself because he can't take it. In another, he decides to let go, and leaves silent hill (essentially dealing with his guilt and continuing with his life). In these endings you get to understand more of the story behind why he smothered Mary. In another ending, he leaves silent hill with Maria, basically suppressing Mary altogether, since this ending doesn't give you any more story behind the death of his wife (my guess would be that he decided to accept maria as being Mary, just in a slightly different form, thus disregarding the fact that Mary died completely).
In the first silent hill, silent hill acts more like a soul trap or something, being kind of like Jacob's Ladder (the movie). In one of the silent hill endings, the main guy just dies with his daughter in the vehicle accident, thus making silent hill just something that occupied his mind while he died.
It varies wildly though. Since I'm tired of typing, just go read this instead:
http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/...hill_plot_a.txt
Edit: That plot analysis sucks.

I disagree.
Spoilers
A lot of things are coming together now.
Like Laura's braveness and venturing out into that city alone so many times. It was because she saw no monsters. She was an innocent child that harbored no guilt for any sin she committed in her life. So that's why she was so confused whenever James told her "It's dangerous out there"
Also they totally had a "The 6th sense" thing going on there. I just realized thinking through the whole game that you never see Maria interract with anyone besides James and the Pyramid Heads.
I also didn't notice Angela dying in the fire in that scene in the fire on the stairs. That hit me hard because I was led to believe that she just wandered away from Silent Hill after that.
Was any of this 'Silent Hill making reality of your mental state' explained in SH1? Because now I understand why all of a sudden James said "It sure is hot as hell in here." when talking to Angel on those steps.
Also, I had a hunch that the Pyramid Heads' intentions were to not kill James. Maybe to spook him, or hurt him, but never to kill. Because, obviously, if they wanted James dead he would have been dead. Long ago.
This whole story is so spooky I don't want to go play the game again and get the other endings. I'll just be depressed if I saw James kill himself.
I had no idea when I started playing that this game would be so complex story-wise.
Much better than I had first anticipated.

I thought it sucked because there was very little plot analysis in it. It was more of a walkthrough-minus-the-steps.

Huh?
That's how the the first 1/5th or so of it was. Did you read the character analysis' ?

Not yet.

THEN DNO JUDGE B4 U KNO.
They did a good job with the in-depth character analysis.
They pretty much covered every hole or question you could have about the story.
My question is how did Maria pick that lock if.....

That was the ending I enjoyed the most. Especially Maria's cough as they are getting into the car.
SH2 is one of the better games I've played in a long time. SH was good, but I just enjoyed the whole atmosphere and story of 2 more.
Posted by: AltronHGX
Spoilers...
But omgwtf. What happens to Maria when they leave the town??
Posted by: AK47
Silent Hill 2 certainly has the atmosphere and story, but gameplay wise, its quite crappy and dull.
But, the atmosphere and all the goods far outweigh the negatives. Cool thread-- really explains some of the stuff I was curious about.
Posted by: Null Actor
Well, still better than Resident Evil IMO.

crap now ima have to play it again to get the other endings. i saw that there were 3 (was it 4?) more but i didnt care enough to get it. i got the one where he left with the little girl 'leave' maybe? anyways ill have to get sh3 when it comes out too

The music in Silent Hill is really cool.

Seeing those shots makes me wanna buy the game. Which system is SH2 out on?
Posted by: Tecil
PC, Xbox, and PS2.
The Xbox version is probably the best because of the extra content and the ability to turn the graphic noise filter off.
Posted by: Null Actor
The graphic noise filter adds so much. And FYI, you can turn it off on the PS2, you just have to beat the game first.
Posted by: Tecil
Didn't know about that PS2 part.
I play with it on myself. I like the grainy look, but a lot of people don't
Posted by: Rousiecat
Yeah the Silent Hill games are awesome. Pyramid head always startled me. Although I really like the first SH in the hospital when you get in the elevator and go to that other floor and everything is twisted. And you hear people behind the doors. Freaked me out!
