Which MMORPG
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: Daniel
Hi, I think that I've asked this question before (about a year ago I think) but now i've played some MMORPG's i'm getting used to how they work more.
So far I have played:
- Neocron (netted myself a free account, hehe).
- Dark Age of Camelot (i've had for ages, but not really played much until now, and i quite enjoy it).
- EverQuest (also had for a while, but i'm now so very very bored of the old engine and features).
- Anarchy Online (well, i'm downloading it now, so i should know more about it in a few hours).
What I wanted to know is what you guys think about MMORPG's, and which you think is the best/personal fave.
I'm interested in information about AC and AC2 (are these games any good?) and as well as Warhammer Online, World of Warcraft, Sims Online, and the superhero one.
Feed me the information

OOOOHHHHHHH!!!
can't forget, what info do you have about the Final Fantasy MMORPG (FF11 is it?) I'm a HUGE fan of FF games (and so so happy that my sister has got a PS2 so I can play FF10 again) but how will the online one differ (please don't tell me they have chamged the battle system, cos i'll be SO VERY VERY UPSET if they have).
Posted by: Null Actor
FF11 has nothing in common with other FF games except for the name and chocobos. The combat is completely different.

*cough*
no
How dare they, it's not fair, the FF battle system is the best thing about FF games, it's what makes them unique in a world of cloned games - and I personally think that it would transfer to online play so well (not to meantion be better than in DAoC where you can go make a cup of tea while your little fella does all the work for you)..
It's like a game of chess, only BETTER!!!
i'm upset now
Posted by: SKYHN
My fav now is Earth and Beyond. I played DAOC for 11 months and Im about to sell my account on ebay now. I figure a year is enough time to play it, even though I didnt make it to level 50.
As for FF11 on PC, unless by some miracle they get through the beta faster, it wont be out til 2004.

If you'd like to complete your MMORPG experience with the currently availible ones, I suggest you check some of these out:
Jumpgate - Imagine Descent, in a space envoirment, with a few hundred players in the same area. Hella fun. No click and forget combat either. Its probably dead now, but there are still free servers you can play on.
Earth & Beyond - The next best thing to jumpgate, although some of its features are plenty annoying, like the missing ability to roate 360 degrees, and the click and forget combat system.
Endless Ages - I haven't palyed Neocron yet, but I'm guessing this is most similar to it. I'd take a friend to play with you though. It can be quite boring with no one to play with.
Ultima Online - Yep, still a good MMORPG, and if you don't like the way origin runs thier servers, there are thousands of populated privately run free shards to choose from.
Of these four, I'd say Jumpgate was the most fun I've ever had on an MMORPG, however, 3DO was running the show. Need I say more?
I'd have to say Endless Ages ran a close second. However, I never subscribed. I just played for the free week, non-stop, then quit. I know altron was kind of pissed.
----------
If you want MMORPG's that are coming out soon, I'd look in to these:
EVE Online - The Second Genesis - From what I've read and heard, it looks like Jumpgate, with better graphics, and more features. I'm deffinetly looking forward to it.
Planet Side - I don't remember if this was supposed to be an MMORPG or not, but if it is, I'd hella buy it.
Star Wars Galaxies - Just because I want to chop a wookie in half with a lightsaber.
There you have it. I can think of several other MMORPG's, but none worth mentioning. Excuse the poor spelling and grammar, I'm to lazy to proofread it, and the spell checker laggy put on this site never seems to work.

Some nice descriptions of some games that I've never even heard of b4
SWG does sound like it's going to be good (at least all the hype says that) but i'm in no way a fan of SW in anyway. but the idea of being able to kill lots of SW fans does appeal to me (I normally hate PKing, but for SWG, i'll make an exception).
UO is something that I'd like to see, it's a point and click interface right? if so then i'm very interested in trying it out. and i wanna see how they managed to transfer it from sprites to 3D graphics. (about these free servers, how do I get info about them?)
OOOhhh, anyone know anything about Shadowbane? it's meant to be an MMORPG/RTS combo.
Posted by: Darky!
From what I've heard, I expect shadowbane to suck.
Anyway, check this out for Free Ultima Online Shards. I personally play on the Oblivion Shard.

Darky, what are you talking about the "Not being able to rotate 360 degrees" with E&B? You cant in the cockpit, but you can with 3rd person view. Simply hold CTRL and the Left mouse button and move the mouse, it rotates fully around the ship. You can save the camera positions to hotkeys too.
Posted by: Daniel
Darky - can you like point me in the right direction for setting this up or something? it says i need the client, but it looks like it has it for download on the site, can I use this or will I need to buy the game?
Posted by: Darky!
SKYHN, you can't rotate 360 degrees. Try rotating in 3rd person or in the cockpit all the way up or down. You'll stop at a 90 degree angle. You can rotate camera angles 360 degrees, but not your ship.
Daniel, You'll need to buy the acctual game. Although you can pick up UO:LBR for about 10$USD. To play on free shards however, you need to download specific files from the shards website that they provide, copy them into your UO directory, and launch the client the provided, instead of the standard UO client.exe.

Oh that. Well I think they did that to cut down on the size of the zones. They are gigantic already as is, but if they didnt have boundries vertically, like a MMO played on land, the zones would be way way too big and the ram requirement as well as the server requirement would be just too much.
Posted by: Null Actor
SWG is the only MMORPG on the horizon with any kind of potential. And then, the only reason it has potential is because it's building off of UO's strengths, rather than the weaknesses inherent to most of the MMORPGs out right now.
I'm not holding my breath though. It'll be a while before anyone makes a true second generation MMORPG.
Posted by: SwizzleStick
Well I haven't seen any screenshots or heard any news for awhile, but Middle Earth Online is suppose to come out in 2004 and its not like an ultima interface anymore. I thought Turbine, or whoever did AC is working on it. I am most interested in this game, but I still like UO the best. A new expansion comes out early next month.

cheers for the info guys

Whatever you do, dont touch Lineage with a barge pole...it sucks.
Posted by: Xtren
My favourite MMORPG is Dark Age of Camalot. It's a great game but you'd probably only want it if you have lots of time and patience, because it takes a hell of a long time before you can level far enough to be able to do anything fun.
Posted by: Daniel
I've got DAoC, am playing it now, my mate liked it so much he is getting a copy himself
I started working on tradeskills today, someone in my guild gave me 100 gold conis to start buying stuff to build armor, etc... so i'm kinda chuffed at that

Dont bother with tradeskills. They take too much time and money. I have 660 Armorcraft, it cost me over 5 platinum and took a long long time. The final straw for me was when I sat there for 2 hours and gained 1 point of armorcraft and spent 500 gold. Crafting isnt profitable unless you have 3/4 of the highest skill.
Save your time and money!
Posted by: Daniel
ah well, i'm up to 100 in armorcraft at the moment, it might be something that I can go back to try out when i'm bored of killing mobs or something.
i'm looking foward to starting RvR, but i've got another 10 levels to go or so - back to the boulderlings i guess

Has anyone here tried AC2?
Posted by: Null Actor
I played the beta.
It's a very dumbed down version of a typical MMORPG. Looks pretty though. And you can't nerf your character cause you can reallocate skill points.
Posted by: Ion Silverbolt
I heard AC2 is currently limited as far as high level characters go. I think it's even capped at level 50 for the time being until more content is uploaded.

I don't see what is wrong with this, you are able to do the same in neocron using LoM (Loss of Memory) pills - and i think it's a fantastic feature that lets you try a range of diffrent skills, etc... to see which is best for you. - and I LOVE IT
Posted by: Tecil
I hated the character animations in the AC2 beta. Just walking it looked like you were floating and walking about 3 inches above the ground, but it doesn't do this anymore in the final.
I would play it, but I decided I would never play another pay to play game after wasting 3 years playing various MMORPGs.

*sigh*
I pre-ordered it(or reserved a copy or something like that, can't remember) almost two years ago and still haven't even gotten any information about it. At the time it was slated to be a revolutionary game and smash the market, but since then Blizzard has revealed World of Warcraft, which promises to make short work of those claims. The screenshots alone for WoW would be worth paying for, while last I checked in on Shadowbane they still hadn't decided on how many different character classes or races were going to be playable.

But remember, WoW is 3 years away
Posted by: Spider
Three years? They've upped the release date have they?
Posted by: Freak
No, because they're Blizzard.
Posted by: Xtren
There was never a release date to begin with. It's just that by the time they get the beta out and the game totally figured out (which they're far from doing cause there's been very little info released) it'll take that long. Some people presume WoW will be out in 2004 even, but there will be much more of a wait than that with all of the delays that are sure to occur in the development.
Posted by: Bobaroo
I read somewhere that WoW was coming out in the fall of 2003
Posted by: Xtren
I've heard people say that too, though I'd be surprised if the beta came out by the end of the year. I wouldn't expect that alone until 2004.
Posted by: Bishlopim
They've said that the beta will for sure be out sometime this year. It's on the WoW website and I believe they've said it in their forums numerous times. Though, this could very well mean that it wont be here until next year.

Just to let you guys know, I was being sarcastic in my above post, it was not to be taken literally.

Apparently everyone Bob.

But why would you play WoW anyway when you can play SWG!
Posted by: Spider
*shrug* I figure by the time World of Warcraft comes out, I'll be ready for another change, and back to a fantasy MMO I'll go.
Posted by: Xtren
I'm happy WoW isn't coming out for a while. By the time it does come out hopefully I'll be able to pay for it by myself, cause I don't have a credit card now anyway and my parents wouldn't pay... there's going to be a monthly fee of what... twenty dollars.
Posted by: Darky!
If they follow the current trend, 5-15$USD per month.

As I've said before, and i'll say again - I will only play SWG so I can PK Star Wars fans (I hate PKing, but hate Star Wars more )
Posted by: SKYHN
Heres a real nice video of SWG from E3. The guy filming it is just Nerdo to the extreme, but its still very cool. When they showed the space expansion part, I nearly lost it.
35mb Video

Oh and pay no attention to Q saying the release date of Dec 2002
Posted by: Spider
The current trend will be $20/month by the time it's released.
SWG is already going to be $20/month, I'd be surprised if a year or so later they offer a lower price than that.
Posted by: Ion Silverbolt
OMG, that game could own for years if the gameplay is there.

Has SWG found another follower? Testify!
Posted by: Ion Silverbolt
I don't know. There's been too many games with awsome graphics and no gameplay. Definately worth a try I think though.
Posted by: SKYHN
The games only 91 days away anyways. Beta 3 is gonna start soon so the first hand info will start to surface. If you signed up for the beta, theres about 99% chance you will get in Beta 3 because its a stress test.
Posted by: Daniel
I can't believe you have polouted my thread with talk of SWG
anyone know anything about Warhammer Online?

No, there is no "chance" involved.
EVERYONE that signed up for the beta gets in stage 3. Also, all Beta 2 participants carry over to Beta 3. Just as Beta 1 rolled over to Beta 2.
Posted by: Null Actor
I'm going to just wait for the official release for this one. Don't want to unduly disregard it because of a crappy beta. I want to disregard it because of a crappy release.
Also, Ion, the combat still isn't action based, so it'll most likely be boring as hell.
Posted by: SKYHN
Heres a pretty good explanation of how combat will work in SWG for those that havent already read about it.
(Turn Wordwrap on or else the text will be too hard to read)

I am so pumped for SWG. The screenshots look beautiful. Will it have similar controls to Jedi Outcast? What is a good MMORPG for me to try out now? Something that isn't like Warcraft/AOE and closer to Outcast or a 3rd person anything?

lol, no.
Posted by: Xtren
I haven't tried for another beta since Warcraft III. I just couldn't get into it, and it was really crappy compared to the actual game. I'd prefer to try a game like SWG after release too... kinda like what Null Actor said. Why is everyone that signed up getting a beta 3 though? Can't be much to look forward to if there's no odds of not getting one.
Posted by: Daniel
hehehe - I spoke with Mythics PR company Lunch PR today, they are going to send me a special preview copy of the new addon for DAoC, and a full verson once it's released at the end of feb
Posted by: Tecil
It's already out in the U.S.

well, we gotta wait, but oh well

DAoC is a MMORPG? Has anyone tried it? It looks cool. What's the gameplay like?
Posted by: Daniel
LOL, yeah DAoC is an MMORPG, from the looks of it half the forum here play it (including me). You have really got to try it, just beware, it's more addictive an EQ.
Dark Age of Crack anyone? LOL
Posted by: AtariFX
What is the gameplay like?
Posted by: Tecil
Fight monsters till you hit level 50 then fight each other.
Posted by: AtariFX
Sounds good to me. Controls good? Think I'm gonna go buy this later today.
Posted by: Xtren
The controls are pretty good... and gameplay is pretty good for a MMORPG, though it takes forever to level up. The game will be very boring for you until you actually do hit a high level like 50 which someone said, because then you can finally do something that's even remotely fun and attack other people Attacking monsters is no fun when the only thing that changes is a few experience points every time you kill one. You'll find yourself sick of them by the time you're at level ten...
Posted by: SKYHN
FYI, took me 11 months to get my Paladin to lvl 46 playing moderately. You can RvR a lot earlier than 50 though. Theres battlegrounds for the lower levels(20 through 35, 3 seperate battlegrounds each with a keep) and once you get to about lvl 40, you can do ok in real RvR groups, not solo though.
Posted by: SKYHN
Theres another MMO that is on the horizon that hasnt had a whole lot of coverage in the mainstream(gamespy has been following a lot though) and that is City of Heros. If they can pull this off, it could be quite good. Some boxes for nVidia GF4 cards have screenshots on them of this game(the lava cave with the red guy standing in it).
Posted by: Xtren
Hey, that actually looks pretty cool. I like the idea of a MMORPG that is not set in a medieval time period. That game is actually set in the present time period (with exception to the monsters). It might be a pretty good game, seems like a new look for a MMORPG.
