Hi Guys,
My Neice called with a problem in '98. She says her machine locks up with an out of memory or insufficient memory error at random times.
She doesn't have enough knowledge to realize the importance of what the error actually says.
Anyway, win98, PII 400, 12 gig w/ 7 free,128 mem, cable modem, zone alarm, NAV, multiple HP drivers for the printer loaded at startup, etc...
Can you offer me some standard possibilities of where to look tomorrow to mayby tune this thing up for them. I am sure she does a lot of internet, email, downloading for her work.
I enjoy helping family with their computers, but am more at ease with strangers. Family thinks you should just be able to wave the magic wand at no cost, strangers understand it ain't easy all of the time.
Just fishing for ideas.
Thanks

The first place you should look is what programs are running in the background. Those HP drivers look to be the culprit, and I doubt your niece or anyone else would use the start ups that HP install along with their drivers. Try pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del and shutting down programs that are not needed. To keep the extraneous programs from starting up again, go to start - run - msconfig - startup and uncheck everything you don't need.

That was my thought also, ZeRo_MaXwInG. Thought that was where I might start. Didn't sound too serious to me, but probably the end of the world as we know it to my Neice.
Thanks

Zone Alarm is a very busy application that is a major resource hog! more ram would probably help the issue.
