Dell Ethernet Setup

My roommate recently purchased a new dell computer. It came with an integrated ethernet drive and we were trying to hook it up to the internet with the router that I currently use to connect to the internet. But, for some reason it won't work. I tried to setup a home/office network connection on the computer but for some reason it doesn't recognize the network nor the internet. My other friend just bought a dell and had no problems connecting the computer to the network. Please help.
