Dell Ethernet

My roommates dell cannot connect to the internet through its ethernet card. I'm trying to connect via roadrunner and when it tries to setup the lan connection through our linksys router it says that an DHCP adapter exists but that it is unable to release or renew an ip address. Is there something I need to do to the dell computer to alter its network settings? My other roommates gateway also running xp had no problems connecting to the router and the internet. Thanks
