game and internet problems

Hi everyone. I'm new but my problem is not and I am not having any luck solving it. The problem involves connecting to various game sites and connecting IP to IP with my friend in a different city.
The problem is wierd because it isn't consistent, I can connect to some game sites but not to others, I can connect IP to IP with my friend with one game and not with another.
Perhaps someone can direct me to a possible solution. In detail the problem is this:
I have a linksys 5-port hub which I use to connect two computers to the internet - each has a dedicated IP address. The cable connection is put in the uplink port.
The computer I use has Windows XP.
I can connect to EA Online to play Tiger Woods 2003, but I cannot connect IP to IP to play the game - either to my friend or he to me. I can play Empire Earth IP to IP or on the website. I can play on Battlenet. I cannot join ZoneMatch or connect IP to IP for Dungeon Siege. My friend and I can join IP to IP to talk with Roger Wilco, a voice over net utility.
By scouring game forums, the Microsoft support site, and the game companies' support people, I have come up with essentially nothing. Some settings were changed I'm convinced by a disastrous attempt to put in a Microsoft Wired Network. This little piece of equipment came with software. I uninstalled it and removed all traces I could find, but my computer had the above problems afterwards. Even when I connect my computer directly to the cable modem, the above problems are still present.
The Local Area Connection Properties and the 1394 Connection Enabled Shared 1394 Adaptor properties have all TCP and UDP ports, and IP protocols permitted. The XP firewall is disabled.
I have reinstalled Windows XP although I haven't reformatted and started again.
Any help would be appreciated.

A few things come to mind..
1. Are u conecting to the same poeple all the time? Some might have routers that are blocking ports the game needs to run.
2. Does the same person always host ? May also be a port issue.
When a you try to connect to someone, the game uses a port (I.E.Counter strike servers use port 27015). If the person trying to host the game has a firewall, or a router, the necessay port may be blocked. There might be a way to open the port on ur end, u might wanna take alook at the manual for ur modem. This probem may also be on ur friend end as well..

Thanks for the input. I only connect to the same person and he and I had no connection issues before I installed and uninstalled the Microsoft Networking Software and now have a hub. I can't get things to work as they did before. His system has not changed.
