I could make a huge list of programs, but I have no idea what you're into. You probably wouldn't use half of them.

Here are a few though, just to get your list started.
- Winrar 3.x
- Winamp
- Nero (or whatever you use to burn cd's)
- Goldwave
- Paint Shop Pro / Photoshop
- Trillian (or another IM program)
- FlashFXP
- FFDShow (google it, it plays alot of video formats, including Divx 3, 4, 5 and Xvid)

InterVideo WinDVD 4 is pretty good if you like to play DVD Movies on your hard drive. So is NVDVD, but its only for nVidia cards.

I think some people might need to refresh themselves on the meaning of the word essential.

First of all, download the latest Service Pack from Microsoft. I believe this is Service Pack 3.

Next, check all of the manufacturer's websites for your hardware and check for the most recent drivers.

Now, the only 'essential' program I find necessary to download is a compression/decompression utility. I personally prefer Winzip. Winzip 6.x has always worked for me but if anyone has information on why a different or more recent version should be used, I'm all ears.

The rest of those programs are just kinda entertainment programs. Feel free to check them out though. I made my avatar today using Photoshop. . .

Alright, maybe they're not essential according to the dictionary but I use alot of them at least daily. Some of them even almost all the time (Winamp/FlashFXP).

People are starting to use Winrar more. Alot of things I download are packed with Winrar 3.x and can't be unpacked by Winrar 2.x or Winzip.
