Messed up IE 6

This just happened after I used Norton Utilities to do a system clean up. IE 6 loads fine but whenever I try to go somewhere, either through bookmarks, or typing it in the location bar, it leads me to the explorer//desktop. Say if I type in another address in that window, it leads me to explorer//windows/system. If I then again type an address in there, it closes and nothing else happens. And this only happens with http:// sites. I can get to FTP directories but if I tried opening a file from an FTP site, it brings me to the explorer//desktop.

System sepcs:

Windows 98 Se
AMD 2100+
256 MB DDR
ECS K75SA mobo

Things I've tried:

- Full virus scan (norton 2003 pro)
- scandisk/defrag
- Windows repair tool
- revert back to IE5 (a DOS window came up and invalid switches were listed)

So basically IE6 won't go anywhere unless its FTP or in a local directory.

Thanks in advance.

Try this,

Check for multiple instances of the Wsock32.dll, Winsock.dll, and Wsock.vxd files. Also check the dates and versions of these files. Rename any file that is not in the appropriate folder (Wsock32.dll and Wsock.vxd should be in the Windows\System folder, and Winsock.dll should be in the Windows folder).

You can go to find files and folders and look in the C drive. Rename multiple instances and ones in the wrong directories with a .old extension. If you don't have one of those files in the correct directory, you might need to extract it into the correct one.

Other things to check:

Clear your temp files and history, and make sure that no proxies have been selected. Also set the connection to either never dial or to connect using LAN and then connect using the dialer in Dial-up Networking and not the auto-dialer in internet options.

Next check your network components, there is only three things you need in here, they are Client for Microsoft Networks, Dial-up Adapter and TCP/IP. Also your NIC provided you are connecting using ADSL or CABLE.

If there is anything else such as AOL software or NETBEUI and IPX/SPX and you are not using these adapter/protocols then remove them.

Check the properties to TCP/IP and under IP ADDRESS - this should be set to obtain automatically. The WINS configuration should be disabled. There should be no GATEWAY installed and the DNS can be disabled.

After you reboot check the connection, if you still cannot get any web-pages then un-install and reinstall all three....the client, dial-up adapter, and tcp/ip. Make sure that you don't restart....do a cold boot...its a computer's band-aid.

Or maybe just un-install then re-install I.E.

I re-installed all the network protocols and adapters that I had before, reset the IPs for the LAN and. Wsock32.dll and Winsock.dll are where they should be but as for Wsock.vxd, there's Wsock.vxd and a Wsock2.vxd. Their dates are the same.

BTW, how would you go abouts un-installing IE? It's completely integrated into Windows so the farthest I can go is back to 5.0, which I have done so already.

You can't.

Yes, sorry I meant go back to previous version. Or fix internet explorer which you already did.

Well, I should reformat anyhow. I'm going to do it right after all my exams so guess I'm stuck with Mozilla for 2 more weeks. Thanks for the help guys.
