Avril Lavigne

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Muggle_Man

Avril Lavigne is the best singer I've ever heard of. She's got the whole punk image down perfectly. Her song's are sad, happy, complicated,(srry about that) truthful and everything else. At the moment she is all I listen to.
She definetaly isn't a wannabe, contrary to what a lot of ppl think. And if she is, I don't care, and obviously, neither does she. When I first heard of her, I was like, "Who???" But when I heard sk8r boi for the first time, it blew me away. She is from, Canada as most ppl should know, in a small town, just like a lot of ppl are. POP. 5,000. She admits that she was, and is a tomboy and always will be a tomboy. She is an inspiration to a lot of ppl, she is only 18, which surprised me. She refused to sing the songs Arista made for her, which shocked the owners. She made all of her songs and continues to make more. Anyway, She is a great singer, a tomboy, and a skater. And if anyone hates her music, they are most likely preppys, the opposite of a punk.

I thought about thumbnailing it, but I didn't want it to loose it's glory.

Posted by: PMS GURL

she's a bitch and a loser and she needs to grow up ALOT. She thinks she can do anything anytime. Come on now, she is acting like a total pop diva but is just a plain ol' poser.

Posted by: uh...ok

I like her songs (hell I love a couple of 'em)... she looks ok... hrm, but one extra comment besides that:

She performed live on SNL the other night and she, like many artists nowadays, isn't really that great a singer. Sure she might have talent in terms of writing music (which is arguable to some people) but her talent in actual singing is, I find, rather lacking.

However, her performance was way better than Alanis Morisette's live on another NBC late night show I saw over the summer.

It really goes to show that the real talent behind "good" artists nowadays lies in the sound editors and mixers.

On a side note, PMS can you please make your comments at least a little bit more logical than that?

-uh...ok
Second Edit: NICE pic Tecil.

Posted by: Spider

Well, I don't really know about all that stuff in Muggle's post, except that it sounds like he has a crush on somebody. Can't blame him though, she is pretty hot. I've heard worse music, but as for the punk thing, well, I really wonder where you get your idea of punk from.

Posted by: Fred

She's a pretty good singer but not the best I've herd of. I really like Nelly Furtado, another Canadian singer. Not to say that I can identify with Nelly that much but I can't identify with Avril Lavigne at all. Plus Nelly is sexier.

Man I have to totally agree with you there. She's not a very good singer. Her songs are great, the way they are written and the effects and all, but just listen really closely next time a concert's live on TV or something. Her voice is kinda mediocre if you ask me.

Well that's really fair, I suppose you know her really well to be able to confirm that. Why's she acting like a pop diva anyway? Is it because she accepts her awards or something? She's good, people like her songs, and above all: if she acts like a diva than all artists do.

Muggles, you made the day. Are you a comedian?

Posted by: Shalome

Sid Vicious and Johnny Rotten are punk. GG Allen is punk. Jello Biafra is punk. People who performed at CBGB are punk.

Avril Lavigne is pure music-industry product. She isn't punk, she's pop. She is bland, innocuous, parentally-friendly radio pop drivel with a catchy beat and clothes that can be bought at just about any mall in the USA. She is the music industry's attempt to capture the dollars of the market segment who don't like Britney Spears, Shakira, and Christina Agalalalagala.

The ****ing Dead Kennedys are punk. The Sex Pistols are punk. Bikini Kill is punk. NOFX is punk.

Avril Lavigne is Britney Spears with a Hot Topic makeover.

Everyone is just so used to the image of women in music that the music industry keeps churning out, that anything remotely different stands out. She's "Hollywood" non-mainstream. See, this is the problem with 4 companies owning every media outlet in the US.. homogeneity of sound and image results in people thinking ****ing Avril Lavigne is "a punk."

Saying Avril Lavigne is punk is an insult to the word punk. My left shoe is more punk than Avril Lavigne.

I like Avril. I agree that she is definately not punk. I'm more punk than she is and I walk around with just about ever black label clothing you can think of

I used to like NOFX, and Avril is definately better than Britney Spears or any other poppy chick anyday.

Avril's a fake. She complains about fake people in her songs but she's a fake herself. Just listen to her sing. She's tone deaf or something. I heard her sing on the billboard music awards on TV and it was awful. Her looks are the only thing she's got.

Avril Lavigne..

She is far from punk.. as Shal pointed out.. as for Shal's left shoe.. I'll take your word for it..

As for her music.. personally..I like it.. I listen to it in my truck.. would I buy her CD.. NOPE.. I tend not to buy much of any CD/DVD/VHS stuff.. I have the a good collection of what I like.. if I want it.. I wait till I can borrow it or rent it..

As for her image.. she is what you want to see in her.. I see a young woman who can sing.. Nelly F... however you spell it is great to..

as for her looks.. I gotta agree with Muggle_Man she is definate wallpaper material..

Like her.. hate her.. prefer your left shoe to her... she is out doing what she wants.. great.. maybe she will replace Britney and her Clones.. GOD WE CAN ONLY HOPE..

Posted by: Xtren

Avril Lavigne will never be anything like Britney or Christina... she's never going to look like them, and she presents herself with a different type of image. No Avril isn't punk, wearing baggy pants doesn't make you that. Her songs are great and they aren't in the least bit offensive, which again, doesn't make her punk.

Avril isn't a great singer, as was said before, but really her songs are written very well. They're very catchy if you listen to them. I don't know if her looks are all she's got either... she isn't that hot... I mean she's considerably short, and she's deffinitely not in the same vicinity as Britney.

Come one, now, people, you're not born with innate musical knowledge. Even AK47, at some point in his life, had to learn who Jim Morrison was.

By that argument, I'd have no idea who The Doors, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, or Led Zepplin were, since my age would have been in negative digits when they came out...

Posted by: Erekose

Ah, but Shalome, he said that he wouldn't know who they were. We all know you (and your shoe) would know Dylan, Doors, Zepplin, and the Stones. Then again, Xtren might even know who they are. Believe it or not, not everyone is going to know who the Ramones are. Punk music isn't mainstream. In fact, unless I'm grossly mistaken, the Ramones would be highly offended to be referred to as 'mainstream'

They would certainly want to be sedated, should they hear someone refer to them as mainstream.

That was kinda my point, Erek... I was trying to say "hey guys, lay off... everyone learns their musical knowledge from somewhere.." (But I was also saying that the "bah, their albums came out before my time" was not a valid argument for not knowing who a musician was.)

i totally agree with muggle avril is the sh*t. if i was to do like the whole star date thing it would be with her. shes my favorite singer and i would go with her. she writes all her own songs and performs them very well and she beautiful and she isnt a poser in anyway if u read her autos or actually knew something about her ud know that. a poser takes what people write for them and lives for the fame and all that bs. she writes all her songs off her own experiences and she uses her fame and money to help less fortunate and if u call that poser u have severe problems.

Posted by: Heathen

ARGH!!!

She's another pop-product. I agree with Shal ... Sex Pistols et all are punk.... shes a rough looking B.Spears.

lol after the fact of my last post im watching trl and the teen idols judges are there judging the next teen idol and they piked their favorites teen idols for the top 10 and she was on it lol above all the other people that have been said so far.

I don't think Avril fits the requirements for true punk/skater punk. OffSpring and Pennywise now they are true skater punk bands. As for punk go Billy Idol lol

Posted by: NightMage

what would you class them as? cos for as long as I have known of the bands they have been classed as skater punk, offspring weren't originally skater but Americana was classed as a skate punk album

Posted by: Erekose

yeah, that was avril. it was from a show on mtv. they followed her around and such. i dont see what the problem was. it was 0230, she had been up for a few days, etc etc. hell everyone looks like that after a few days without sleep.

Posted by: Heathen

PUNK = Sex Pistols, Ramones

Not Avril Whatsherface. I mean can anyone imagine Joey Rammone singing "Complicated"??

Really???

Posted by: Erekose

just for clarification, would someone care to explain just what is 'punk'? heh no offense to any one intended, but ramones = punk is not an explanation of punk

Posted by: Gunslinger

You just need to be sedated.

Posted by: Heathen

Posted by: redwench

if anyone gets sedated here, it will be me.

Posted by: Freak

If Avril was punk then Nsync are thrash. dude. It doesn't even sound like punk, its pop with guitars that have a heavier-than-usual-distortion on.

And if you listen to more Avril, there is NO way the rest of her non-hits are punk. ITS POP! Not to say Pop and Avril are evil, its just nausating to see someone classify them as skater punk heh.

Posted by: Erekose

so, i ask again, what is 'punk'. not who, mind you, but what. like what would make some thing 'skaterpunk' as opposed to say 'broccolipunk'?

Posted by: Canis Lupus

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=punk

Some of the latter descriptions are disturbing, lol ...

Posted by: AtariFX

Anyone consider Nirvana punk? Does Avril think she's punk? I was one of those kids in highschool who wore the ripped cardigan sweater everyday. I enjoy pre-Dookie Greenday myself. It's Ramones'ish' to a point of where they just use the same guitar chords over and over and a lot of it sounds the same. Both have an attitude that stands out too.

Umm no....

Nirvana was considered "Grunge Rock" at the time, but their new classification is more along the lines of "Alternative Rock".

Posted by: Erekose

aye laggy, i did that before i asked still doesnt say what is 'punk' and what isnt though, unless you mean the part about the little boy

perhaps i asked the wrong question. perhaps waht i meant to say was 'what is punk to you'. maybe it would help if i say what i think it is. from what ive gathered its mainly about fighting conformity. yep, see what i mean. i dont know squat. thats why i asked

No that's not the case either... I'm pretty well aware of who they are. Unfortunately I have never heard the Ramones before, not a single song.

Why would Nirvana be punk anyway? They clearly didn't present a punk image. Their songs were great, but clearly more along the lines of grunge (like Tecil said) rather than punk. Didn't their lead commit suicide though? I've seen some of their videos on TV not too long ago and I'm confused (I realize they have a new lead but I never heard about it so I was just wondering when a song of theirs came up).

Posted by: Tecil

Nirvana is dead and gone. Kurt Cobain commited suicide back in 94. The band split and went on to do their own projects. Dave Grohl (drummer) is now lead singer of the Foo Fighters.

The new stuff you heard was an unreleased track was one of many that Cobain's wife Courtney Love has been hoarding.

Supposedly there is a boxed set comming out sometime this year with a bunch of unreleased tracks on it.

Posted by: Xtren

Oh ok thanks. That explains a lot. I never heard the story behind their "new" songs and I was wondering what had happened after all these years since Kurt Cobain had killed himself.

Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Nirvana) joined QOTSA on the road in 2002 for a small club tour in North America and some festival and club shows in Europe and Japan. He also played drums on all but one of the songs on Songs for the Deaf (2002).

Here's the QOTSA FAQ, where i found this little tidbit.

i acutally thought he did every track but 2 on songs for the deaf, but this proves me wrong. i can't find any info. on the damn cd booklet!

I know who the Ramones are!!!

But, I don' t want to be sedated.

I'll probably get a lot of opinions on this one, but I consider the Suicide Machines punk/ska. I like them. I would consider Operation Ivy and Rancid (same band diff name for those who don't know) punk. Ummm...1039 and Kerplunk by Green Day, SR-71, the old old Blink182 stuff before the days of their sellout album, Enema of the State (if that's the one I'm thinking of with What's My Age Again on it), NOFX I would think is considered punk, but I could be wrong. How about the Dropkick Murpheys? Black Flag? MXPX? Sex Pistols definately. Bad Religion? (taking a guess on that one, I don't listen to em, just know of em) I like all kinds of music, just going out on a limb with punk.

edit: Oh! And don't forget the first few Vandals albums!!!

Not true. Here is a perfect example of guys giving props to a woman who deserves it and the women staying out of it because, well, she's is a woman who deserves it. In contrast, you will see a great deal of harsh criticism when the object of praise is a busted-ass pop-tart. Mark my words: as soon as Avril Lavigne starts to show any signs of aging, she'll have less of a future than Robert Blake.
