Router question

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm gonna buy a router so I don't have to keep a pc on all the time (to share my internet connection).

If I buy the cheapest one I can find, will I regret that? The only thing I need it to do is share the internet connection and network all the pc's.

I don't skimp on computer components. I would rather pay $20-30 more for quality components that are reliable. I guess that goes for just about anything I buy. I don't mind paying for it if it's worth the price.

Depends on how "cheap" we're talking here ... I don't know how much "generic" routers are going for (if they even exist), but I do know that even the quality routers like Linksys, Netgear or Dlink are pretty cheap nowadays ... a 4-port router goes for about $40-$60, last time I shopped...

It doesnt matter as long as it has the functionality. but cost does affect the functionality and more importantly the quality. Do consider though easier usability on the interface.

By the way, are you looking into broadband routers or high end routers...eg, isdn or t1s..

I use the Linksys BEFSR41, 4 port router and have been happy with it. retail is about $89.95, but I have seen it on sale on many occasions for $49.95 at Best Buy and Circuit City.

However that router can actually handle way more than 4 computers because you can hook a hub to an uplink port next to port 4 (when you do this you sould not use port 4) if you want, thereby increasing the number of computers that can be hooked to it. Using switches, this router is capable to handle up to 253 users.

I've got a Netgear RP114 Broadband router and that works fine 4 me! (4 port)

It's for a cable connection, about 4mbit.

I guess I'm going for a brand, like linksys or something. One more question though, how fast are these things? I need it for the netwerk too and I want a 100mbit network. Would I need the hub for that or is a (normal priced) router 100mbit too?

10 or 100 mbit doesnt make a difference, you wont be able to get that much out of your connection anyway.

But getting a router/switch that uses 10 mbit could be hard, coz now-a-days the 10/100 mbit is pretty standard.

€60,- should be enough for a decent router

//edit//
decent could be an understatement for some routers, but then again.... nothing is certain in life, you could buy one that would cost you €200 but gave up on you within 2 months.

If i would buy a router, i'd get one that would cost around €100,-

E-Tech, 3Com, Sitecom, Cisco are some good brands

Alright, thanks everyone

That Linksys BEFSR41 looks cool, it's probably gonna be that one.

*hijack*

I just bought the microsoft desktop kit wich comes with one base station which acts as a router for all of the wireless stations and as a switch for any computer hooked up through the 4 rj-45 jacks and one wireless computer hook-up.
does anyone know anything about the quality of microsofts wireless networking technology or if this is worth it? or should i return it ang go out and buy a different router?

If it works, keep it.

I just got my Linksys BEFSR41 and (obviously) it works

I guess I'm gonna try some games now and figure out how to open ports and stuff
