How do you feel about your current computer?

Poll time

This week's poll begs the question - how do you feel about your current system? And by "current", we mean the one you're using right now to view this poll.

Do you feel that your computer is still capable, or do you also long for that much coveted upgrade? Share your thoughts!

Posted by: d!g!talhardcore

I said mine was sufficient for my needs, mainly surfing and playing UT2k3. After an unexpected (read unwanted) upgrade over Christmas my system is running rather smooth. The only thing that I could probably use is another Video Card which i shall purchase over Summer.

My Specs:

Lian Li PC-60 Case w/ Windows
AMD Athlon XP 2000+
MSI KT4V
1GB PC2100 DDR RAM
GeForce 3 Ti200
Soundblaster Audigy Gamer
Promise ATA 133 TX2 Controller Card
Linksys NIC Card
Asus 8x DVD-ROM
TDK 24/10/40 CD Burner
40GB Maxtor 7200RPM
40GB Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM
80GB Maxtor 7200RPM
Windows XP Professional

Posted by: Bobaroo

600mhz Celeron
GF3 Ti200
384mb SDRAM
30gb HD

Need I say more? hehe...I really need a new computer

Posted by: bLaCkOuT

I really need to upgrade, but since I can't afford it and it is good enough to serve my current needs, I voted to "limp along".

P3 450
GF3 Ti200
The cheapest SBlaster ever made
384 Mb SDRam
20Gb HDD
58x CD-Rom
24x/12x/48x CD-RW

Posted by: Outlaw

It's sufficient for my computing tasks.

I might buy a new video card eventually, my Geforce 2 isn't quite fast enough for the newest games. It usually does good enough on the medium quality settings though, and I don't play that many games anymore so I can do without, until Doom 3 gets released anyway

And since everyone that replied (all 2 of 'em ) listed their specs:
AthlonXP 1800
512 MB PC2100
Geforce2 GTS
40+40+60 GB HD's

Posted by: Tweaker

Mine is more than I need to do what I do, but I still like having the horse power.

P4 2.4 GH

512 RD Ram

120 gig hd with 8mb burst cache

GeForce 4 ti 4200

Posted by: SKYHN

Im in need of a RAM and CPU Upgrade pretty badly.

Posted by: taco_fox

It's sufficient for my computing tasks.. but being the overclocker I am, I can't help but eye PC3200 ram and the new Tbred B 2100+ that has been hitting 2.4GHz.

What I have now:
Epox 8K3A+
Athlon XP 1600+ at 1725MHz
512MB PC2100
30GB and 40GB harddrives
Radeon 8500 'classic' 64MB
SB Audigy

Posted by: tkron

I have two computers but am getting near the time when I may need to upgrade one. The two computers are:

CPU #1
PIII 866mhz
256 PC800 (rambus) memory
40 gig ATA 66 HD 7200
Nec DV-5700 12x/40x DVD Drive
Sony CRX140E RW 8x/4x/32x CDRom
MX400 GF2 64 meg Video card
SB live Value sound card
harmon/karden Speakers with SW
older Nec MS-XV17 17 inch monitor

CPU #2
PIII 933mhz
512 PC133 memory
40 gig ATA 100 WD 7200 HD
Sony 52X CDRom Drive
Sony CRX-160E 12x/8x/32x R/W CDRom drive
GF4 Ti4400 128meg Video card
SB live Value sound card
Labtec Speakers
MAG 986FS 19 inch monitor

Posted by: redwench

dire need of upgrade. actually, just ordered the last thing that i need to do it -- thermal paste.

p3 733

Posted by: nocode

Sufficient

Athlon XP2200+ 1.8ghz processor
Asus A7V8X MB
1gb pc2700 ddr memory
2 X 100gb 7200rpm WD hard drives
Asus V8440 Geforce 4 TI4400 128mb TV/DVI
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum
Lite-on 16x40 dvd drive
Lite-on 40x12x48 cd/rw drive

Posted by: justinious

I'm limping along.

All I need is new speakers, soundcard, and another stick of RAM. Maybe I'll use Valentine's Day to buy myself some RAM , and drink enough on St. Pat's to buy the rest.

Posted by: Tecil

I don't play as many games on it as I used to, so I'll probably be using this box for a while.

Soyo Dragon Lite
Athlon XP 1800
512MB DDR 2100
Geforce4 4600
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz Sound
2x40GB HDs
24x12x32 Plextor CDRW
52x CD

I have a couple laptops to, but they aren't even worth mentioning....hehe

Posted by: ZeRo_MaXwInG

AMD AthlonXP 2100+
Ecskk7s5a
256 DDR
40 GB
32x12x40 LG CD-RW/DVD@16x
MSI GeForce 3 Ti 500

It's alright for me. I don't do much gaming nowadays so nothing really to change in the sound/graphics department. The thing I want at the top of my list is either a new 19" flat screen (or at least a 17 incher) or a new stick of 512MB DDR RAM. After that, a new hard drive would be nice.

Posted by: Null Actor

Mine is sufficient for now, which is why I decided to forego the upgrade I was going to do this month.

Athlon 1400
MSI K7T Turbo2 LE
512 megs PC133
Plextor 16x10x40A Burner
Acer 40x CDROM
Maxtor 40gb 7200RPM
Soundblaster Audigy Platinum
Visiontek GeForce 3
Antec SX600 case

I do need to pick up a harddrive though, just waiting for the seagate barracuda Vs to show up in stores, cause they are uber quiet.

I figure I'll do an upgrade towards the summer, aim for hyperthreading, the granite bay chipset, and most likely an ATI 9700pro (or whatever they've released by then), since the GeForce FX is a piece of shit.

All i can say is my comp sucks big time

Posted by: Heathen

My damn heatsink fan on my Mobo is crapping out... I'll replace it tomorrow.... damn its LOUD

Gigabyte.... say no more

Posted by: Wacheif

I Voted "Holy Shit! My Computers Crap!"

For a number of reasons...

First lets start with processor its a AMD 300MHZ i can barley run anything worth using... second i have a small 14 GB Hard drive and im always running out of room.... i have about 120 MB of ram so i cant run many programs at once... my CD-ROM has screwed up it cant read any cd's and now only opens half way before getting stuck.... also my power supply inside the comp its screwed half the time my CD-ROM and Discket drive dont have power.... and my PC also has problems detecting my keyboard quite often.... and to top everything off my video card is a Voodoo 3 3500 TV card and i sometimes have problems with my video and drivers andthing... so i basically have the worst computer in the entire world... ( End rant )

mis sis745
athlonXp 16***1.56ghz(would go higher but my cooling sucks)
512 meg of pc2100 crucial
msi gf4 ti4200
60 gig maxto and a slaved 120 gig maxtor both 7200 Rpm

and as i said it may be sufficent but i really wanna upgrade...maybe a barton pc3500 ram, ati 9700Pro

Posted by: ElmStreet

1.0 tbird athlon
256 sdram
ecs k7s5a
gf4 mx440
dvd drive + 16X rewritable drive
sound blaster live 5.1

upgrading vcard to gf4 mx was a huge jump from what i had. but still 256 sdram isa bit too low for gaming.

limping along, but need to upgrade soon

I've got a crappy computer. Specs:

Intel AMD 300MHz
64 Mb RAM
16 Mb Voodoo 3
20 GB Western Digital HD
50x CD-ROM

Here's what's really funny. I cannot put the exact specs because I cannot look them up. My Hard Drive AND Motherboard are currently busted. It's time for a new computer.

My specs are pretty much the same as wacheif, but hey, wacheif, at least yours works! I can't even turn mine on.

I'm typing this on another P4 1.5Ghz computer in my house. It's not mine though.

Posted by: rexoverbey

Mine is good enough to last till the end of the year.

AMD Athlon XP 2100+
Chieftec case, 5 80mm fans
Visiontek GeForce 4 Ti 4200 128 mb
Hercules 5.1 DVD soundcard
Bus Link 16x DVD rom drive

Hell, my comp is moe than enough, but I still want more, the GFX card definetly needs chucking in the bin, POS.

AMD Athlon XP 1600

I voted "Other" as there was't a give me more goddamnit!

Posted by: BACONHEDDv6.6.6

Which computer? LOL I voted "...limp along".My newer one is more or less sufficient for another 4 months I guess. This one is a little lacking, but hey-it's not it's fault...it gets "Hand-me-down-hardware" from it's big brother! I just think the Win OS's I've tried are never sufficient,-more than the hardware issues...

Posted by: jet66

Of course I would like to upgrade (I'm using an Athlon 1.2G w/384m) to a new P4 w/1G ram, but I've been putting my money in some remodeling (turned son's room, he moved in with mom, into music/PC/recording room) to make better use of my home space. I run pretty bare bones though, as far as progs running in the background, etc., so I am still jamming along fast enough to not feel like I'm driving a dinosaur.

Posted by: Whifflebat

Over a year old and it still kicks arse IMO. Plays Halo at 1280x1024 no problem on high settings, along with Wolf:ET and Warcraft III. Does photoshop and all that good stuff too. And its not even overclocked yet! :-D

P4 1.6a/400mhz fsb
MSI SiS645 mobo

one 60 gb hard disk and a 17 gb hard disk IDE
one 1 gb hard disk and one 4 gb hard disk, and an 80 meg hard disk, SCSI

LS-120, ZIP-250
4 channel Soundcard ESS
150k slow broadband (NTL)
2 usb ports
16x DVD drive

The only good thing about this machine is the 640 meg system memory. trying to run windows 98 second edition, plus upteen updates and patches.

May upgrade to p4 at 2.0 ghz, if money/health permits

It kinda scares me that my comp slows down when I open the minimap on D2.

I'm in pretty bad shape. I'm still on dial up, 700MHz Celeron, I have two hard disks, I'm not sure of the sizes, but I think one's a 20 gig and one's like an 8 gig that I found at work, with 128 Megs of Ram, a 16 meg video card, a barely functional 6x CD burner, an old, no longer supported sound card that's crap.

I'm most likely going to be treating myself to a new box and broad band soon, though. Hooray!

Posted by: covenantazkiker

guess mine's between 2 and 3... it's quite capable for doing serious work though i felt the need to double my RAM (its 128 right now) and a better graphics card (have a 32mb TNT Riva 128), whenever i use Photoshop and CorelDraw at once... then launch Counterstrike!

current spec:
P4 1.7 Ghz (got it correct this time)
128 mb
30 Gb Seagate 7200rpm

Posted by: The PC Guy

It's sufficient for my computing needs at the present time, but that could change at any time!

I am currently running XP Pro in an 800MHz Pentium 3, with 320Mb of SDRAM, 64Mb of video RAM and an 80Gb hard drive. The usual CD-ROM and CD-RW drives and an internal 100Mb Zip drive, that I hardly use these days.

I access the internet via a cable modem, with downloads of 512K and uploads of 128k. I may consider upgrading to a faster connection, when the prices come down a bit!

The PC was built out of parts from my 'bits box'. I'll probably upgrade as and when, to whatever becomes available to me, in the future.

I voted Sufficient but i did just buy a new video card that has yet to arrive.

As it stands.

AMD Athlon Xp 2700+ (2.16Ghz)
Abit AN7 nForce 2 Ultra
2x512MB Kingston PC3200 Dual Channel

80GB 7200RPM Seagate
ATI Radeon 9600 PRO 128MB AGP

It's pretty good for what I need it.

Well, I said more than enough simply because I haven't seen it come close to overworked yet.
2x18.1" lcd moniters-LCD ROCKS!
Nvidia Quadro FX 500-My little $300 Quadro is coming along quite nicely on games
Dual Intel Xeon 2.8GHz HT

Pentium II 350 mhz...original
384 megs RAM (Don't even know the type, upgraded from 32)

And that's about it.

Currently using Windows 98/Mandrake Linux 9.1 dual boot.

1024 MB PC2700 RAM
ASUS A7V600 MoBo w/USB 2.0
80 GB HD w/8 mb cache @ 7200 RPM

i might not be able to prevent myself from getting the new Nvidia Geforce 6800 Ultra. but i certainly dont need to get it!

Posted by: Wheelzup

My current system is ok for most applications but I'm taking some CAD classes and learning how to use Photoshop and at times my system slows to a crawl. What do I have now:
1. Athlon XP 2800
2. Asus A7N8X
3. 512 MB PC 2700
4. ATI Radeon 9600 128MB
5. 80 GB WD Special edition HD
6. Creative Audigy 2
7. Asus 16X DVD
9. Plextor 48X24X48 CD/RW
10. 350W PSU
11. Generic Case

I'm in the process of building a completely new system, once it's done I'll see what everyone thinks about it. Hint Athlon 64......

I just upgraded, so I'm a lot better than I used to be, but I'm extremely lacking in the graphics department. A Geforce 2 Mx 200 just doesn't cut it. My upgrade was from 2ghz Celeron to Athlon XP 3000+ 400FSB and I went from using 256 PC2100 RAM to 512 PC3200, so I'm pretty happy with the new system except for graphics because most of what I do is gaming.

Well it appears that I am not the only one so peeved at Acer theyre head spins.
I got my travelmate 1yr and 8 mos ago and always treated it like gold...my second laptop...was my baby.
However there was always an overheating issue with it that acer simply told me that I needed to make sure there was proper ventilation....ok so I put the laptop up on a rack that was wire and was 6 inches up high.
This made typing a challenge but to keep it from getting hot I sufficed convienence over a overheated machine....which consequently still got oven hot....could have baked cookies under that rack below the laptop.
Another call to acer and now I get this "all laptops get hot if left on too long"....um excuse me but a half an hour is too long?
I think not!
I had gotten this laptop through this technical school that included these oh so wonderful acers as part of sighning up.
So I had some ammo.
I called the other students and found that with three people, they had the same issues as I did.
I cannot stress enough how much I think that Acers suck!
One person sold his acer laptop because of its issues of getting too hot and shutting down. The other has sent his in for repairs to the mb because it simply got too hot. The other still has hers but she hardly ever uses it because....you guess it...it gets hot.
I am now looking at a very dead laptop that is just barely 8 months out of warranty and no relief in sight.
I cannot afford to get another and my credit...like acer....sucks so getting one on credit is way out of the question.
I'm smelling a class action lawsuit my friends...if I can muster enough people, I think that its dooable.
email me if you have these issues on your acer laptop at network2004@comcast.net

Both #1, and #4.

even though some of my parts are less than 6 months old, I'm looking to upgrade to an A64 system in January or February. I figure with the money I get from Christmas plus the money from selling my current parts, the net cost of the upgrade shouldn't be too much

edit: I just realized I first replied to this thread almost two years ago

I have a quite sufficient computer for my needs to I play America's Army and store all my work for flash movie developing.

What I have:
2.9 gHz Processor
Intel(R) Extreme Graphics
248mB of RAM

Posted by: The Voice

I feel my computer has serious, serious problems.

1.4 Ghz
2 GB RAM (RIMMS) (insanely expensive upgrade, but very much worth it. No load time whatsoever
128 MB GeForce FX

Even though processor and MB is getting old, (3 years now?) The performance isn't a problem at all. My problem lies in the fact that this silly thing is always crashing for no apparant reason. Just normal installs from respected software companies can smash my OS (Win XP), and cause me to have to reinstall everything. I refuse to get another computer until at least 2 gigs RAM comes standard in a PC. I know that seems a bit much, but YOU try paying $1000 for RAM upgrade just to let it sit on the shelf.

Posted by: Merlinmsk

ok, my old computer that i still use is pure sh!t. its a Windows ME using 160 Megs of SDRAM, 600 MHz Intel Celeron, onboard video with only 1mb allocated to it. It also has only a 10 Gig HD. Gladly though, my new rig is upstairs, but its the family computer, which blows

Posted by: streetlight321

AMD Sempron +2200
256 DDR
175 GB
MATSHITA DVD-ROM
Soon to be on a MSI Nvidia Geforce 4 TI 4200 but currently on a Geforce 2 Ultra

To be perfectley honest i desperetly need more memory for my gaming needs, and on the fantasy list AMD Athlon 64 +3200, and ATI Radeon 9800 All-in-Wonder. The only perfect thing about my computer is the amount of space, a couple free hard drives here or there, shhhhhh.

Posted by: oderus1671

im a limp-a-longer
i cant run on "OMFG, you cant get any better" settings on most games, but i can use the "wow, thats pretty high" settings on all games i play so im ok right now.

windows is screwing up my pc.

one of these days, i will have a pc dedicated to linux. Maybe a linux server. Windows is one CONSISTANT VIRUS.

the only good thing about windows is that it has firefox. But big woop.

well and truly time to abandon windows. and i will not regret it

weedinux out
(notice inux, as in LINUX!)

ha ha, lol

Posted by: Brkrmode5290

I'd board the Linux train, but I'm still too familiar with Windows.

As for my computer, I certainly feel different from my previous statement.

I got a Wintergreen PC (someone tell me that they've heard about this computer;
everyone I've asked so far just says 'hunh?'). Its specs include 512 MB DDR333 RAM,
80 GB HDD, P4 w/HT 3.0 GHz with shared memory (64 MB) for display.

Going a month after that statement, tried to install a 2nd HDD and CD-Rom. It only
made it slower and very laggy (Try listening to Jay-Z in super slow-mo, It's 2 parts
frustrating and funny). I'm considering getting either 1GB extra RAM or
just a new computer/motherboard, since I've noticed from a number of people that
DDR333 Ram doesn't maintain its consistency after a while.

I agree with Shadysoldier. Mine is better than I need already, but I've gotten an upgrade virus or something. I'm constantly trying to make it even better than it already is.

Posted by: matt.modica

I've got that upgrade virus too.

Posted by: pdnielsen

The scary thing is that it can become contagious. One of my college buds is using a second hard drive to back up data on his primary drive, has a full gigabyte of memory and still insists on using a memory optimizer that is meant for much less capable machines. Maybe it's mutated - just like the flu bug! (He doesn't know about RAID yet and I'm not tempted to tell him. He probably still thinks of Raid as bug spray. Thank goodness.)

Posted by: goranpaa

Well, If I could lay my hand on a decent Conroe cpu and Epox dito mobo. But unfortuntly I dont have the money for the time beeing and Epox have'nt started to make Conroe mobo's as far as I know.

But I'm pleased with the stuff I got. Finally, a really silent and cool running PC case. My old Chieftech whas good at cooling, but YAY! The noise!!! 80mm fans sounding like mini hairdryers. A good 19# LCD is also on the wich list.

Posted by: khmerxkid781

Well im happy with my new rig, but i just need ram and test my x700 out. Plus im not home stuck baby sitting and waiting till my parents come back from over sea's.

Posted by: p3ngu!n

I've had my Athlon 64 3000+ for two years now. No problems. No need for upgrades yet. It still does the job damn well.

Posted by: pdnielsen

For now it's terrific. All it needs is a digital out port (SPDIF) for the sound. If I upgrade to Windows Vista, then it may need another 2 gig of memory, but with Windows XP X64 the 2 gig I already have is plenty. I noticed the price of the CPU (Athlon X2 3800) is nearly half what it was 6 months ago, so I am going to wait a while longer before I build another PC for myself that will have PCI-Express. AGP serves me well for now too.

Posted by: JohnsO'laid

Ah well now i cant complain about my new rig, However i feel like getting a new one cause i can seem to get it to work
