Keen gamers can rejoice as US scientists are working on ways to make computer games that never end.The researchers are adapting AI techniques used for robot navigation to manage game worlds that constantly present fresh challenges to players.
Games created using these techniques will be less like scenes from a film and more like a reactive and interactive world that players can explore almost endlessly. Already the researchers have created several virtual environments overseen by their story management system.
Especially funny how it's a total waste of time. Gamers don't want true non-linearity. You give it to them and they bitch that the game is boring because nothing happens, while failing to realize that it's up to them to make things happen in a non-linear game.
Gamers have more fun when they are led around by the nose in terms of story. The instant you give them the freedom to choose on a large scale, they find the game boring and uninteresting.

Can you say Morrowind...

Morrowind is a decent example, but far from great. The game had many other problems besides the non-linearity. But then again, most people didn't get far enough to see those other problems because the non-linearity turned them off.

I never tried it on PC, but I have it on Xbox, I think I have a total of 2 hours invested. Mainly because I just found other games that held my interest longer.

I'm tempted to get Morrowind actually... only $30 at Best Buy and it looks really cool.

What is the point of Morrowind? Combat is a complete joke. Its basically just running around for a long time taking items to other people. They should have called it "Paperboy - Bikeless Edition".

Yeah, you walk over a bunch of hills and swim through water for 45 mins, still without a bike(or hoverbike for water)
