Evidence from the financial world suggests that Electronic Arts is gathering an "acquisitions warchest" of several billion dollars in preparation for a major spending spree later this year - with even Japanese giant Nintendo considered to be a potential target.

Earlier this week the publisher made a $2 billion shelf filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission in the USA, allowing it to make public offers of securities and raise massive reserves of cash very quickly should it choose. Details of the filing indicated that the company plans to use the cash to finance expenses such as research and development or acquisitions.

Wow. Very interesting. Lots of consolidation going on here, or at least rumored to be. Microsoft -> Blizzard, EA -> Nintendo, what next?

Here's a link to the full story.

I'd imagine Nintendo is worth far more than 2 billion dollars. A century old company who has dominated the entertainment sector for two decades... they aren't going to be purchased that easily.

Edit: And considering that Nintendo turned down microsoft a few years back, who has 40 billion to burn, I don't think 2 billion will even come close to getting Nintendo.

Maybe a partial buyout is possible. Like maybe just their console line. They pretty much own the handheld market so there would be no reason to part with that.
