Warcraft III CD Keys Banned/Accounts Closed
Friday, January 31, 2003

In keeping with our aggressive stance against hacks and cheats, we have permanently disabled 1,000 CD keys from ladder play on Battle.net, resulting in the permanent closure of approximately 2,000 accounts that were tied to those CD-Keys. We have also permanently closed 27,000 additional accounts and disabled 16,000 CD keys from ladder play for one month. These accounts were determined to have used a hack or cheat program while playing Warcraft III on Battle.net. In the case of the CD keys that were banned, at least one account tied to each CD key was identified as having used such a program while playing on Battle.net.

Good to see that Blizzard is still fighting all the hackers

This was deffinitely a good idea. It'll surely make a few people think twice before hacking the next time. I think it's a pretty good move by Blizzard. They should do it more often in the Diablo games.

Yes, I'm also proud that Blizzard is taking such extreme measures; I feel that is what is needed. But just a question -

How exactly does Blizzard know that you were using hacks? I mean, they cant possibly even look at 5% of the games played. Is it just done on random, or they only view replays that are of people of a certain level or higher? Just curious. =)

I'm not really sure. You can be certain that a large number of accounts are reported by other gamers, so those will probably make up a lot of the banned accounts. They can't just choose to ban accounts on random.

actually, a large number of them, if not the majority, are detected automatically, using programs that examine the packets sent.

wow. automatic detection? Thats what I'm talking about! =)

Cool, I never knew that. Wouldn't have though it was that easy.

I love what they do on DAOC to catch people who have radar programs(a radar program shows where mobs, npcs or players are at without actually seeing them onscreen, stealthed or not). A CSR will put out a ghost NPC(it cannot be seen by anyone not using a cheat) somewhere near the person suspected of using it, if the person goes to attack it, BUSTED!

I bet CSR's get a real good laugh when some hax0ring fool goes after those and gets slapped with a suspension or ban. I would lmao at them
