Digital Camera Advice

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Alrighty, here's the deal. I got my first paycheck from my new job, and it was only for 25 hours so it's quite small. Well, providing my last unemployment check comes today then I can use it to help pay for my car payment, I either want to get a Gamecube or Digital Camera.

Providing I choose the digital camera (which is what I'm leaning towards more), I'd like to buy one at Circuit City, and I've checked the website, read the reviews, blah blah blah, but you can't always go by reviews. So, my question is if I'm shopping at Circuit City, which digital camera should I buy? Keep in mind I only have about $200.00 to spend and I want to get a memory stick too. I want something with clear pics as a must, but other snazzy little features aren't really important. tanx

out of all the digital cameras in the $200 price range that i looked at on circuit city's site, i would buy the Sony 2.0 Megapixel 3x Digital Zoom Digital Camera for $199.

i have a Sony digital camera and a Sony digital camcorder that i have been extremely pleased with.

you do know youll talk to me if you buy anything at circuit city, if you got an extended warranty, that is, LOL

any of the major manufacturers will do. canon, olympus, sony. but do make sure you get accessories with it, like an ac adapter and usb cable. the sharpness of the image depends on the size of the image, in megapixels. manufacturer really doesnt much matter. dont go below 2.0mp and youll be fine.

You'll need to consider what type of battery it uses.......if you choose one that uses AA's then you'll find it pretty easy to get some decent rechargables and maybe even a spare set along with a suitable charger which will make feeding the little jigger very easy and cost effective, same goes for the type of memory card, I went with CF cards 'coz they are available in decent capacities and cheaper than the other types and are easier to source ........... guess I'm really saying beware of "propriety" type products.

Your not really gonna get a whole lot for $200. Just about every 2.0mp camera is $299 and under. Thats ok for maybe like simple picutres, but I would get something 3.1mp or higher. And I would get something that takes SmartMedia cards(or is compatable with them). That memory is pretty cheap, 128mb sticks are only like $40 at Newegg. SecureDigital cards are faster, but they are so much more expensive, as they are latest tech right now in memory cards. Sony memory sticks are nice too, but also expensive.

I would stay away from Kodak for Digital Cameras. They have been having problems lately with a lot of stuff, people getting completely dead ones out of the box, memcard ports that dont work, and other things.

sounds good guys, and thanks for the advice on the cameras. I'll have to check and see if I have enough this weekend to buy one, if not, it'll be a month or so, but I'm willing to wait.

I've always wondered about this. I've been wanting to buy a digicam as well, but I don't want to have to buy a special printer just so I can print the pics out. Can you drop off your memory card at some place, like Walmart's photo lab, and have them printed for you?

I bought a factory reconditioned camera direct from Olympus. It came with all accessories and a full warranty. It may be worth a look.

I wouldn't go below 2mpxl and don't pay attention to digital zoom, software will do that. Cannon makes an awesome digi. Sony's are VERY overpriced.

I like Cannon products. I wish I was still working at my old job, because we received a 30% discount on all digital cameras, and most of them available were Cannon. But when I was ready to buy one I lost my job. A good question that was brought up earlier, can you drop the memory card off somewhere? I don't exactly have the money to buy a good printer.
