PS2 has problems reading blue discs!
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have a problem playing games in my PS2 that have the blue underside. If I use diagnosis, it will work but it still makes a loud noise when the disc is spinning. Not sure if my laser is dirty or what the problem is. Need some advice, please.

There ya go man. Its a horribly common problem and we've had our share of posts about it here.

Sorry, after making my post I was looking at some other ones, and I didn't realize it was such a common problem. Guess I'm going to buy a new Playstation now. Damn Sony retards.

Its not a common problem. It just seems like it is because everyone uses the internet to try and fix the problem, hence all the people asking about it. There are 50,000,000 PS2's in the world now, if even 250,000 of them had problems, which is no where near the # that are, thats only .5% rate. Find an electronics manufacturer that can match or do any better than that, and you will find one happy company.
Could be worse though. You could have to boil your discs in hot water to get them to work or send it in for repairs if it has a Thompson DVD drive like a certain "X" system.

Or your system could melt into a big pile of black and green goo, eh?

While a coating of sarcasm is all over that statement, that has happened. I only know of 3 that did that though, and they were launch systems(hasnt happened since). It didnt melt completely, but it did melt the portion right above the GPU and CPU.
And just to be fair, GC has a similar problem to what happened with the PSX. The part that you push the CD down onto wears out over time and the discs wont sit properly anymore causing a disc read error. Theres another problem too, but I dont remember it at the moment.

Dude, I hope you're not backing the PS2 dvd player. Tis a piece of shite. The fact that it has problems reading even 1 dvd is a serious problem. It's a dvd player... not being able to read a few certain dvds is unexcusable. If my JVC player turned the colors all funky on chapter 12 of Tron, I'd be taking it back to the store and getting my money back.
Whats this about "boiling" discs? You believe that dropping thin pieces of plastic in boiling water will help it? Have you been hanging around some PS2 fanboy sites...
Oh, and I think that the outbreak of busted ps2s is more serious than you think. True, the internet opens us up to seeing more complaints from people, but take the Dreamcast for example-- the net was around when it came out and there were/are no where near the amount of problems reported with them as there are with PS2s. Yes, Sega didnt sell as many DCs as Sony does PS2s, but they sold enough to where you could pick out trends in problems that people report.
Face it, Sony makes shoddy machines... happened with the PS-X and its happening again with the PS2

My PS2 has been an excellent DVD player. Ive got almost 100 DVD's, plays all of them perfectly. No defects, no slow loading, no slowdown or anything.
Teamxbox is where I read about boiling the discs, not some PS2 site. I dont used a biased site towards or against one thing for news on another. There were people having trouble getting their xbox's to read discs. Not necessarily a disc read error, but like slow downs or half loading, some guy posted about boiling them. People tried it and it worked. I dont know why the hell that would work, but it does. Search their forums if you dont believe me.
Ive still yet to find one person family or friend or friend of a friend(and so on) who has had a PS2 stop working or similar, on them. If this thing is just sooo poorly built and such a piece of crap, then I should know at least 1 person with a problem(I know 28 people first hand with a PS2, 8 of them with a launch).
Why is it that the PS2 is so easily said to be a shoddy machine when both the Xbox and GC have their problems almost of the same degree as well(not in #'s but in type)? Try searching Xbox.com, TeamXbox, nintendo.com and even IGN's forums for "Disc Read Error" in the Xbox and GC sections. I cant wait for the day for one of you to have it happen to your precious Xbox or GC, maybe one of you will get one of the lovely Xboxs that have the Thompson DVD drive in it that are dead out of the box. Or the GC with the laser motor that only goes halfway. What will you say then?
I think maybe I will start advertising OTS's Console forum in some Xbox and GC forums telling people to go there for console problems. Perhaps then you can see im not talking out of my butt.

Your PS2 dvd player isnt any different from anyones. It has the same compatibility issues that they all have.
You just havent run into any of the discs that it has problems with.

My PS2 hasn't run into any discs that it had problems with either (and I consistently watch approximately 4-5 DVDs a week!). So I guess either I'm one lucky bastard or my PS2 is another exception to the compatibility rule... or it's taking its own sweet time before it craps up...

No no. It's only certain dvds that it has problems with. It's not something that degenerates over time.
Here's a list of various dvds and their problems...

Thanks for that list ... I'm using PS2 2.10 drivers (coz I bought the remote) ... altho it's weird that they cited a problem with FF: Spirits Within with the 2.10 drivers, when I just watched that DVD a month ago with no problems ... probably a fluke...

When I had my PS2, I had a couple discs lock up on it. The Matix would lock up in the menus but would work if you just hit play and got it to run before it hit the menus. And I had the problem with Final Fantasy the Spirtins Within locking up on chapter 6.
Other than that it worked fine.
