PS1 games on PS2

So a few of my friends and I are starting to play a few older PS1 games on my friends PS2. However, we've run into a dilemma with a few.
In particular, FFIX Disc 1 and Xenogears Disk 2.
It seems the PS2 won't read these discs. I've tried cleaning them with a non-abrasive cloth (Eyeglass wipe), and while this enabled us to go further then we could before, it still didn't help.
So before we run off and buy these games again, I'd like to run over our options.
First, it seems while the PS2 won't read the discs at certain spots, my computer can just fine; using an emulator I can get past area where it normally locks up. I assume this is because my cd-rom isn't as sensitive to scratches as the PS2.
Now, this opens up several option. We could just play it on my computer, but I'd rather use my computer for other thing.
Or I could image the disc, and burn it. The problem with this is though, I've never seen a mod chip for a PS2, and so I'm not sure if it will play backup copies of games. I've heard if you use the utility disc that came with the PS2 you can load backup copies of games, if so, how?
I could also buy a game doctor. While I already have one of these, it doesn't work to well. It covers the discs in marks, and after you buff it enough to actually get the marks out, your back to where you started.
I've also tried turtle wax, and while it filled in some of the major scratches, it didn't fix the problem.
So, what other options do I have?
A few things to know:
-The PS2 we’re using Is something like 4 years old. Its one of the first production models. It runs perfectly, and hasn’t showed any sign of problems yet.
-We legally own the games we’re having problems with.
-The scratches on the disc are mainly fine line scratches, or in some cases, small circles or white areas.
-We’ve tried many, many things, including (But not limited too): Peanut Butter, Toothpaste, Turtle Wax, Liquid Wax, and even Noxima.

Turn off the 2 special options for PSX discs, fast load and texture sharpening(or whatever you call them). Its known to cause problems with games that have FMV's in them or other streaming effects.
That is if you have them on.

I'll try that too. Yesterday I was playing FF8 somewhere towards the end of Disc 3 and the game would completely lock up during the first few seconds of an FMV.
I hope this helps me too~

Peanut Butter, eh?
Oh, and as far as I know, there arent any compatibility issues between the PS2 and Final Fantasy 9. I played quite a bit of the game on my old ps2 and never ran into any issues.

I didn't even know you could have compatibility issues with ps1 games on a ps2. All of my ps1 games are scratched to hell and I've never had a problem. And peanut butter??? Heh, I like that idea.
